In my latest article, we examine how the last 15 years of green policy in Australia, at both the state and federal levels (however well intentioned), have brought a once prosperous country to its knees.
To make matters worse, the damage done may be difficult to repair. Apart from wanting to tax the crap out of Australian-based businesses, we'll also slap them with a slew of cleverly worded levies (tax in a pretty dress is still tax).
As if that weren't reason enough for an investor to cancel that flight to Australia, we throw about 300 environmental hoops in front of businesses and expect them to jump through them no matter what the cost. Unfortunately, only about one out of every twenty businesses can be bothered to try to navigate the green tape that we have now thrown in the faces of prospective investors.
Spending cuts are a good idea, but they will not get Australia out of the red. We need to focus less on what money should not be spent on and more on what opportunities we should embrace and support.
Australia must get out of its own way and stop believing that every company in the world is secretly plotting to destroy the Australian environment.
Stop living in fear and please stop listening to certain people who wear pretty green and teal-coloured shirts.
Let's start doing the things that will fix this country, and then once we have a big fat bank account and no debt, we can start doing all the wonderful environmentally charged things that we all know we need.
