Where teachers can find a resource, include it in a lesson, and open the world of Spanish culture one class at a time without modifying their complete teaching plans.
Incorporating cultural components into any kind of language instruction program not only enriches the educational experience, but also aligns with the broader educational objectives of fostering well-rounded, culturally aware individuals. Help your students achieve not just language proficiency, but prepare them for a complex, multicultural world.
This site includes resources for teaching Spanish culture and covers products, practices and perspectives you can use in the classroom. Use these elements to teach traditional Spanish instruction in secondary levels with a focus on Spanish 1 courses.
The resources can be added to any lesson. To make connections between these resources and the culture target, establish the aspect of culture it pertains to in your class. Resources can belong to one or more categories mentioned below. Just follow the symbols.
For example, in the Unit 2 video resource, use the culture aspects as follows:
Product (What?)- Platillos populares
Practices (How?)- En la calle, en fiestas, con amigos.
Perspectives (Why?) - La gente de Mexico come en puestos callejeros por que el clima y el espacio lo permiten.
Symbol for products
Products answer the question of what is used in the culture? These are tangible and intangible cultural artifacts created or used by a society. Products can be the works of literature, as well as, paintings and musical genres. Intangible products are folktales, proverbs, and traditional recipes.
Symbol for Practices
Practices answer the question of how the cultural artifacts are used? These refer to patterns of behavior and social interaction that are common in a culture, such as rituals, customs, everyday routines, and norms of politeness.
Symbol for Perspectives
Perspectives help explain why people in a culture behave in certain ways and what they consider important or meaningful. They underlay values, beliefs, and worldviews.
Hello! My name is Karla Alpizar and I am a Spanish teacher in Utah. I grew up in México. I have a computer science degree from Instituto Politécnico Nacional. In 2023, I received my teaching certificate from Weber State University. I created this website as my Master's Degree project. I want to highlight the importance of cultural competence as a skill I foster in my students. I hope this project brings light and aids all Spanish teachers to never leave out the culture aspect in their instruction.
