มิ่ง..พักนี้ ไม่ค่อยได้เห็นตาเชื่อมออกมาช่วยยายขายปลาบ้างเลย.. รึว่าแกไม่ค่อยสบายกันล่ะจ้ะยาย...

วัดเหนือนู่นแน่ะ..นี่ ก็เห็นบอกว่าจะไปสนทนากับหลวงพ่อ ถึงข่าวคราวเรื่องสงครามที่กำลังวุ่นวายอยู่

มิ่ง..เออ..นี่ยาย เกิดสมมุติว่าสงคราม มันรุกลามมาถึงบ้านเมืองของเรา แล้วพวกเราจะหนีไปซ่อนตัวอยู่

ที่ไหนกันดีล่ะจ้ะยาย..

  อีกอย่างบ้านเมืองของเรา ก็ไม่ได้มีเรื่องเกี่ยวข้องกับเขาเลยสักนิด แล้วมันจะมีเหตุผลอันใด ที่จะทำให้

  พวกทหารตาน้ำข้าว มันเข้ามารุกรานบ้านเมืองของเราล่ะไอ้มิ่ง...

ครั้งใหญ่อีกครา... 

...8 กันยายน พ.ศ 2484 เวลา 02.00 น.เรือรบของญี่ปุ่นได้ยกกำลังพลขึ้นฝั่งบริเวณภาคใต้ของไทย

อันประกอบด้วย จังหวัดสงขลา ปัตตานี ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ นครศรีธรรมราช สุราษฎร์ธานี ชุมพร

และบางปู ส่วนทางบกเข้าสู่จังหวัดพิบูลสงคราม การมาของญี่ปุ่นครั้งนี้ได้เกิดการปะทะกับทหารไทย

อย่างรุนแรง...(ทหารไทยยิงต่อสู้กับทหารญีปุ่น)

.การสู้รบครั้งนั้น กินเวลาไม่นานนัก จนในที่สุด วันที่ 9 ธันวาคม รัฐบาลไทยโดยการนำของจอมพล 

ป.พิบูลสงคราม จึงได้ออกประกาศยินยอมให้ญี่ปุ่นใช้ประเทศไทยเป็นทางผ่านเพื่อไปมาเลเซีย

สิงคโปรและพม่า ด้วยเห็นว่าไทยนั้น มิอาจต้านทานกองทัพญี่ปุ่นได้ และเพื่อมิให้เกิดความสูญเสียที่

จะตามมาในภายหลัง  ไทยจึงจำต้องจำยอม ทำตามเงื่อนไขของทัพญี่ปุ่นไปในที่สุด..

  ของข้า ยังคงมิเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามกาล ข้ายังจำได้ดี ยังจำเส้นทางสายมรณะแห่งนี้ได้ดี

 เพราะมันคือเส้นทาง ที่มีราคาค่างวด ต้องแลกมาด้วยชีวิตของเชลยศึกทุกคน ทุกไม้หมอน ทุกหมุดปัก 

 มันถูกสร้างมาจากชีวิตของพวกข้า และข้าจะขอจดจำเส้นทางมรณะสายนี้ ไปตราบชั่วนิจนิรันดร์

Consequently, Thailand was compelled to align with Japan, unable to find a way to avoid it.

To facilitate their war strategy, Japan planned to construct a railway...

...at Nong Pladuk (หนองปลาดุก) station in Ban Pong (บ้านโป่ง) District of Ratchaburi Province, passed through Kanchanaburi across the River Kwai,...

...and extended westward to Thanbyuzayat (ทันบูซายัด) in Burma, ...

...covering a total distance of 415 kilometers.

...traversing mountainous terrain and dense forests with steep and uneven elevations. 

Despite the extreme heat during the day and incessant rain, the construction relentlessly continued.

บรรยาย*..แม้ไทย จะประกาศเป็นกลางในสงครามครั้งนั้น แต่ด้วยญี่ปุ่นได้ใช้อำนาจทางการทหาร

เข้ากดดันไทยอย่างหนัก  จึงทำให้ไทย จำเป็นต้องเข้าร่วมกับฝ่ายของญี่ปุ่นไปโดยหาทางหลีกเลี่ยงมิได้

และเพื่อเป็นการขับเคลื่อนยุทธศาสตร์สงครามให้บรรลุเป็นไปตามเป้าหมาย  ญี่ปุ่นจึงมีแผนการสร้าง

เส้นทางรถไฟ เพื่อลำเลียงยุทธภันฑ์ กำลังพล ไปยังประเทศปลายทางคือพม่า โดยได้เริ่มก่อสร้างสถานี

ต้นทาง ที่หนองปลาดุก อำเภอบ้านโป่ง จังหวัดราชบุรี ผ่านจังหวัดกาญจนบุรีข้ามแม่น้ำแควใหญ่

ไปทางทิศตะวันตก จนถึงด่านเจดีย์สามองค์ ซึ่งมีสถานีปลายทาง คือเมืองทันบูซายัดประเทศพม่า

โดยมีระยะทางรวมถึง 415 กิโลเมตร

บรรยาย*.ครานั้น กองทัพญี่ปุ่นได้เกณฑ์เชลยศึกฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ได้แก่ อังกฤษ อเมริกัน ออสเตรเลีย 

ฮอลันดาและนิวซีแลนด์ ประมาณ 61,700 คน อีกทั้งยังจ้างกรรมกรชาวชาวจีน ญวน ชวา มลายู พม่า 

อินเดีย อีกนับแสนคน เพื่อมาก่อสร้างเส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะแห่งนี้ การก่อสร้างนั้นเป็นไปด้วยความ

ยากลำบาก เพราะพื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่นั้นเป็นภูเขาและปกคลุมไปด้วยป่ารกทึบ มีความสูงชันในระดับที่ไม่

เท่ากัน ในขณะที่อากาศกลางวันร้อนระอุ บ้างก็เจอกับฝนที่ตกตลอดวัน แต่การก่อสร้างก็ถูกดำเนินต่อไป

นายพลญี่ปุ่น....เราได้รับคำสั่ง ส่งตรงมาจากสมเด็จพระจักรพรรดิแห่งญี่ปุ่น  มีมติให้พวกเรา  รีบเร่ง

   สร้างทางรถไฟในพื้นที่ประเทศไทย ให้แล้วเสร็จภายในระยะเวลา 1 ปี....หากใช้เวลาเกินไปกว่านั้น

อาจจะมีข้อเสียเปรียบทางยุทธวิธี จงนำคำสั่งการ ไปแจ้งแก่นายทหารผู้คุมงานทุกคน ว่าให้เร่งดำเนิน

  งานอย่างเคร่งครัด ทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน โดยไม่เลือกวิธีปฏิบัติ ห้ามมีผู้ใดขัดขืนเป็นอันขาด.ไปได้.

ACT 2 - The Deadly Railway

...already enduring grueling labor with insufficient care, now found themselves in a living hell, ...

...a creation of human hands driven by the insatiable hunger of war.

บรรยาย*.แสงแดดที่แผดร้อน ยังทอไอประทุ เสมือนจะละลายแผ่นดินให้สิ้นไป.ในขณะที่คำสั่งการได้ถูก

ประกาศใช้  ขั้นตอนในการจัดสร้างทางรถไฟต้องดำเนินไปด้วยความเร่งรีบไม่มีวันหยุด เชลยศึกทุกคน

ต้องผลัดกันทำงานตลอด 24 ชั่วโมงจากที่ต้องทำงานอย่างหนัก ไร้ซึ่งการดูแลที่ดี บัดนี้ ชีวิตของเชลยศึกทุกคน จึงมิต่างอะไรไปจากการตกอยู่ในขุมนรก ที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาจากน้ำมือมนุษย์ ผู้หิวกระหายในสงคราม

POW1: "Ah! My...my leg! Ohhh..." (Injured by shrapnel from a blast while cutting through the mountain)

POW2: "Help! Someone, please help us..." (Running to support his injured comrade)

Narration*: The daily occurrence of illness and injury among the Prisoners of War was a grim reality. Even with ...

...field hospitals set up by the Japanese, comprehensive care was impossible ...

...due to insufficient medical supplies for the sick.

The treatment tools were rudimentary, leading to a growing number of deaths every day.

Yet, the Japanese army relentlessly pushed forward the construction of this deadly railway,...

...prioritizing their strategic war goals. The work continued until the construction of a bridge over the River Kwai was necessary.

Initially, a temporary wooden bridge was built, followed by a permanent one. 

The Prisoners of War had to work under the brutal supervision of Korean ...

...and Japanese guards throughout.

เชลยศึกศึก2...ชะ.ชะ ช่วยด้วย ชะช่วยพวกเราด้วยเถิด..(เชลยศึกวิ่งไปประคองเพื่อนเชลย)

บรรยาย*.ภาวะการเจ็บป่วยและได้รับบาดเจ็บของเหล่าเชลยศึก เกิดขึ้นอยู่ในทุกวัน แม้จะมีการส่งตัว

ไปรักษายังโรงพยาบาลสนาม ที่ญี่ปุ่นจัดเตรียมไว้ แต่ก็ไม่สามารถ ดูแลชีวิตของเชลยศึกเหล่านี้ ได้อย่าง

ทั่วถึง ด้วยเหตุจากยาที่ใช้รักษาโรค ไม่เพียงพอต่อจำนวนผู้ที่ล้มป่วย มิหนำซ้ำ เครื่องไม้เครื่องมือที่ใช้ใน

การรักษานั้น ก็เป็นไปตามอัถภาพ ที่พอจะจัดหาได้  จึงทำให้จำนวนผู้เสียชีวิต เพิ่มพูนขึ้นมากในทุกวัน.....

..แต่ถึงอย่างไรก็ดี กองทัพของญี่ปุ่น ก็ยังคงเร่งดำเนินการ ก่อสร้างทางรถไฟสายมรณะแห่งนี้ให้เสร็จสิ้นโดยไว เพราะเป็นเป้าหมายสำคัญในยุทธศาสตร์สงคราม การสร้างทางรถไฟ ดำเนินไปจนถึงจุดที่จะต้องมีการสร้างสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแควใหญ่ จึงมีการสร้างเป็นสะพานไม้ชั่วคราวในระยะสั้น จากนั้นจึงเริ่มก่อสร้างเป็นสะพานถาวร ซึ่งเชลยศึกทุกคน จะต้องทำงาน อยู่ภายใต้ความโหดเหี้ยมของผู้คุมชาวเกาหลีและญี่ปุ่นตลอดเวลา...

Narration*: The sky echoed with the distant groaning of aircraft. 

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the area, scattering debris from the Kwai River Bridge in all directions.

Characters: (Japanese Soldier + POWs) during an airstrike

POW1: (Shouting) We're prisoners of war! Please don't bomb us! Please, spare us!

POW2: (Yelling) "H…h…help us! Please! Deliver us from this hell!... Please!"

Narration*: Amidst the chaos, the desperate prayers to the divine seemed futile,...

...almost provoking the relentless assaults from the aerial reapers above. 

The Allied forces continuously bombed the Kwai River Bridge, ...

...striving to cut off Japanese supply lines. Yet, this strategic destruction came at a tragic cost – the lives of...

...numerous Prisoners Of War, lost amidst the rubble of the repeatedly targeted bridge.

เชลยศึก2....(ตะโกน).ชะ ชะ ช่วยพวกเราด้วย พาพวกเราออกไปจากขุมนรกแห่งนี้ด้วยเถิด. ได้โปรด

บรรยาย*..อนิจฉา เสียงอ้อนวอนร้องขอกับพระเจ้าครานั้น หาได้มีผลแต่อย่างใด ตรงกันข้าม..เสมือนว่า

เป็นการปลุกเร้าให้มัจจุราชแห่งฟากฟ้า ได้เร่งเข้าโจมตีสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแควอย่างหนักหน่วง......

..ฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ได้ส่งเครื่องบินทิ้งระเบิด เข้าโจมตีเพื่อทำลายสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแควครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า

เพื่อเป็นการตัดเส้นทางลำเลียงไพร่พล หรือยุทโธปกรณ์ของญี่ปุ่น มิให้เคลื่อนย้ายต่อไปได้ แต่.อนิจจา

ผลจากการทำลายล้างสะพานครั้งนั้น จำต้องแลกมาด้วยชีวิตของเหล่าเชลยศึกที่ล้มตายไปเป็นจำนวนมาก

Japanese Soldier: Thank you ma’am. Let’s proceed, men, be thorough!

(Japanese soldiers search but find nothing)

Japanese Soldier: Thank you for cooperating. If you see any strangers, please inform us... 

We'll be leaving now.

Young Woman: Of course... (Japanese soldiers leave)

Young Woman: It's safe now. No need to be afraid. They're gone now.

Escaped POW: (Cautiously coming out) Thank you, ma’am. I… I really am grateful.

Young Woman: That’s alright. Where will you hide next? The Japanese soldiers ...

Thai Interpreter: Hello, Boonpong. I've brought some Japanese soldiers to buy supplies from your shop.

Boonpong: Oh, sure. What do they need?

Interpreter: They need dry food, medicine, and fruits and vegetables in large quantities. 

Boonpong, Do you have enough?

Boonpong: We have enough rice, dry food and medicine. Fruit? 

We have not ordered those at the moment. But we can, if you guys want.

Interpreter: The Japanese soldiers would like to check your stock. If you allow.

Boonpong: Sure, please feel free to look around. (Japanese soldiers enter the shop)

(Boonpong secretly talks to the POWs)

Boonpong: (Speaking in English) Are you all war prisoners? 

POW: "Yes... Do you speak English?" 

Boonpong: "I can communicate well enough. How are you all managing?"

 หลายคน ก็ทยอยล้มหายตายไปเป็นจำนวนมาก ฮือ..ฮือ..ฮือ...พวกเราเหมือนตกอยู่ในนรกครับ ฮือ ฮือ..ฮือ

บรรยาย*..เมื่อต้องได้ฟังและรับรู้ในสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น ตลอดจนได้ไปเห็นคุณภาพชีวิตอันย่ำแย่ ของเหล่าเชลย

สงครามด้วยตาของตัวเอง จึงทำให้บุญผ่อง เกิดความคิดที่จะช่วยเหลือกลุ่มเชลย ด้วยวิธีการแอบใส่อาหารและยารักษาโรค รวมไปกับสินค้า ที่จะต้องส่งมอบให้กับฝ่ายญี่ปุ่น เพื่อที่จะได้นำเอาสิ่งของเหล่านั้น

ไปช่วยบรรเทาความทุกข์ยาก ให้แก่เหล่าเชลยสงคราม  ที่กำลังได้รับทุกขเวทนาอย่างแสนสาหัส....

บรรยาย*..ถึงอย่างไรก็ตาม แม้จะมีอุปสรรคที่เกิดขึ้น ในระหว่างการจัดสร้างเส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะ

ไปต่างๆนาๆ แต่การก่อสร้างสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแคว ก็มาถึงผลสำเร็จ โดยสามารถเปิดใช้อย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 25 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2486....ท่ามกลางเสียงแซ่ซ้องดีใจของเหล่าทหารหาญ ชาวแดนอาทิตย์อุทัยที่ร่วมกันเฉลิมฉลองด้วยความภาคภูมิใจ...

บรรยาย*....สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแควได้ถูกเปิดใช้งานมาเป็นระยะเวลาเกือบ 1 ปี จวบกระทั่ง ในเดือน

พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ 2487 ฝูงบินของฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ได้เข้าโจมตีเพื่อทำลายสะพานแห่งนี้อีกครั้ง โดยครั้งนี้ได้ทำการทิ้งระเบิดโจมตีสะพานอย่างหนักหน่วง จนเป็นเหตุให้สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแคว ได้รับความเสียหายจนในที่สุดจึงเกิดการพังทลายลงมา...
