Dr. Luyang Zhao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University, a position he has held since August 2025. She received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Dartmouth College, where he was advised by Professor Devin Balkcom. Prior to that, she earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, where he conducted research under the supervision of Professor Maria Gini.Her research interests include soft modular robotics, computational design, robot perception, and learning-based control.
Dr. Josie Hughes is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor at EPFL, where she leads the CREATE Lab (Computational Robot Design & Fabrication). Her research focuses on computational design, soft robotics, and embodied intelligence, developing robot systems tailored for real-world applications from agriculture to wearable technologies. She earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge and then was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at MIT’s Distributed Robotics Lab. Her work has been recognized with the 2024 IEEE RAS Early Academic Career Award and the MassRobotics Rising Star Award.
Dr. Hua Chen is a tenure-track Assistant Professor. He received the B.E. degree in automation and an honorary degree from Chu-Ko-Chen College, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2012, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA, in 2018. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher with The Ohio State University from January 2019 to June 2019. Then, he was a Research Assistant Professor with the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, where he is currently a Research Associate Professor. His research interest includes the interdisciplinary area between control, optimization, and learning, with applications in robotics, currently focusing on developing reliable perceptive mobile manipulation schemes for legged robots.
Dr. Tin Lun Lam is an Associate Professor - Presidential Young Fellow at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He directs the Center for Intelligent Robots at the Shenzhen Institute of AI & Robotics for Society, and is Executive Deputy Director of the National-local Joint Engineering Lab of Robotics & Intelligent Manufacturing. His research focuses on field robotics, multi-robot systems, and modular robot design. He received his PhD in Robotics and Automation from CUHK and has been recognized with awards including the IEEE/ASME 2011 T-Mech Best Paper Award and the IROS 2020 Best Paper on Robot Mechanisms & Design.
Dr. Roderich Gross is a Full Professor of Computer Science at Technische Universität Darmstadt and a Senior Lecturer in Robotics and Computational Intelligence at the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on swarm and reconfigurable robotics, collective intelligence, and machine learning approaches such as “Turing Learning,” which he pioneered. He leads the Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems group at TU Darmstadt and the Natural Robotics Lab at Sheffield Robotics, and has also been a visiting scientist at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
Dr. Benoît Piranda is an Associate Professor at the University of Franche-Comté and a member of the FEMTO-ST Institute in Besançon, France. He leads the Distributed Algorithms for Programmable Matter group, focusing on modular robotics, distributed algorithms, and behavioral simulation. He is the principal developer of VisibleSim, a parallel simulator for modular robots that models communications, movement, physical interactions, and sensors. His research includes projects such as Binky Blocks, 3D Catoms, and Datoms, exploring programmable matter and collective robotic behaviors.
Dr. Zhao Lin received his M.S. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in ECE at The Ohio State University, USA, and a B.S. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology, China. Before joining NUS, he was a research scientist at Aptiv Pittsburgh Technology Center, working on autonomous vehicles. He was an intern at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory working on smart grid optimization. Lin joins the CISR Area to focus on control, optimization, and learning theories, with applications to multi-agent systems and UAVs.
Dr. Moju Zhao received the Doctoral degree in mathematical informatics from the Department of Mechano-Informatics, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2018. He is currently an Assistant Professor with The University of Tokyo. His research interests include mechanical design, modeling and control, motion planning, and vision-based recognition in aerial robotics. Dr. Zhao's main achievement is the articulated aerial robots, which have received several awards in conferences and journals, including the Best Paper Award in IEEE ICRA 2018.
Rui Fukui is a Professor at the University of Tokyo. He received the Ph.D. degree in information science and technology from The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2009., From 2004 to 2006, he worked at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. From 2009 to 2013, he was a (Project) Assistant Professor with the Department of Mechano-Informatics. From 2013 to 2016, he was an Assistant Professor (a full-time Lecturer) with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Tokyo, where he has been an Associate Professor with the Department of Human and Engineered Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, since 2016. His research interests include the intelligent mechanical systems based on “Distribution and Integration.” Concretely, he works on mechanism design, sensor system development, and novel application of machine learning technology., Dr. Fukui is a member of the IEEE, Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), The Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ), The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), and The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity (JSTP).
Dr. Nikos Tsagarakis is a Tenured Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator of the Humanoid & Human Centered Mechatronics (HHCM) Research Line at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa, Italy.His research focuses on advanced mechatronic systems, including compliant humanoid robots, wearable exoskeletons, and robotic platforms for human-robot interaction. He has coordinated several EU-funded projects such as WALK-MAN and CONCERT. Other notable projects where he served as principal investigator include COMAN+, CENTAURO, euROBIN, REPAIR, HARIA, and MAGICIAN.
