Course Description: This course focuses on strategic uses of communication channels in health, environmental, and other public interest campaigns. Emphasis is on general principles relevant to most campaign types, including public information, social marketing, and advocacy campaigns.
Course Assignment: Students will work in teams to create a communications campaign plan for a non-profit organization of their choosing, designed to achieve change on a particular issue. Student teams will identify 2 – 3 campaign goals that their campaign will be designed to achieve. After identifying the goals, students will develop a 10 – 11 page plan. Campaign plans will also be pitched in front of the class as a 12 minute presentation.
Course Description: Uses of social media technologies in contemporary public relations practice. Social and behavioral theories of social media processes and effects. Strategies and tools for authoring content that builds relationships and creates conversations with key publics.
Course Assignments: The main assignment for this course is a content strategy proposal for a small business that students create. Students will identify key elements of social media content strategies as well as create mock-up tactics. Proposals will be shared in a poster presentation in class and turned in as a 3-page paper at the end of the course. Throughout the course students will also write a 2-page case study on a social media campaign as well as a 2-page analysis of the Netflix Fyre Festival documentary.
