Tonality returns to The Wallis with Refuge / Requiem, a moving program that places voices from across centuries into conversation. The evening opens with Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands, a contemporary work that draws on 17th-century musical language to explore themes of refuge, responsibility, and shared humanity. As the music expands and transforms, it invites listeners to consider how compassion takes shape through attention and care.
The program continues with the radiant 1605 Requiem by Tomás Luis de Victoria, composed for the funeral rites of Empress María of Spain near the end of the composer’s life. Known for its intimacy and clarity, the work offers a profound meditation on grief as both a personal and communal experience, shaping sorrow into prayer and remembrance.
Together, these works create a space for reflection and connection - honoring those we have lost while offering care for the living. Refuge / Requiem is an invitation to listen deeply, mourn collectively, and find meaning through shared presence.
