The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
In my Technology in Education class, we created a video lesson and quiz on the lesson for a flipped classroom. I created a presentation using Educreations and Wevideo. The quiz was made through Google Forms. The video shows how students can use single digit scientific notation to estimate very large and very small numbers.
The benefits that come from having a flipped classroom are amazing, and I realized this while making the presentation and quiz. Because the instruction for the lesson is given through a video, a student may watch any part or the entire video as many times as they need to understand the concept. This coincides with performance indicator 5M where is says, “The competent teacher uses strategies and techniques for facilitating meaningful inclusion of individuals with a range of abilities and experiences.” Also, there are various tools that can be used to make presentations like these. I looked through various options in the process of making the presentation to decide which was best for what I wanted to teach. This demonstrates performance indicator 5C, “The competent teacher knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources.” These technological resources were very useful in making the lesson for class.
During the creation of this presentation, I learned so much about a different approach to teaching than I’m used to. I’m familiar to the traditional approach to teaching with the instruction given in class. It was good to experience an approach where students can’t as me questions as the lesson is going. I had to predict what type of questions the students might ask and answer those questions while I’m teaching the lesson. It was difficult because you couldn’t see the students and whether or not they were understanding throughout the lesson. Also, it was great being able to find a tool that I thought would work best for my needs in this presentation and learn how to use it on my own, just like I would if I were a teacher. Creating this video and quiz helped me to prepare for my future as a teacher and helped me to learn about different approaches to teaching students.
