Nambour, a town in Queensland, Australia, is on Petrie Creek and was built around the timber industry. Nambour, the name came from a word describing tea-tree bark. Nambour is a small town 100 miles north of Brisbane. It was named Nambour by William Samwell after he discovered the location in 1870, just inland 15 miles from Maroochydore. Nambour has grown from a small, mainly agricultural community to a thriving urban centre in just over one hundred years. Through several periods of financial depression, agricultural downturns and flooding, the town has survived, but the sugar plantations are producing their last crop even now. Nambour's future is brighter than ever. In 1890, Nambour became the administrative centre of the newly created Maroochy local government division. In 1896 it became home to the centre of the Maroochy Chilli Cultivation Society, which was formed to promote chilli culture in the Maroochy district. When the railway arrived in 1891, Nambour grew quickly. Five years later, it was the host of a wildly-popular agricultural show and, by 1903, had its own newspaper. In the 1920s, Nambour was transformed by developments such as a chamber of commerce, a cannery, an electricity grid and several new sawmills.

The decade ended with opening of a district hospital, actively supported by lodges and friendly societies in a predominantly Protestant town. In the 1950s, economic activity in the Maroochy district began to move to beach towns, disturbing the Nambour citizens. A group of them decided they could not bear to see their hometown disappear, so they set out on a journey that in time would forever change Nambour's fate. When a new highway was built in the 1970s, connecting Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast (a region in southern Australia), Nambour's small downtown shops were bypassed by traffic. But many small businesses and vendors started opening along the highway, and tourists flocked to the Big Pineapple on Woombye.

The promise of prosperity and the answering the call to unsettle and start new in the far west drew many people to Nambour. They built their homes, businesses, mills and schools and created life and community for future generations. The lifestyle remained distinctively Australian, and There's a reason why Nambour is called the Friendly Town.
