Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken sounds of words. Prior to reading print, children must first gain awareness of how the sounds in words work. This includes the ability to segment and blend syllables, onsets-rimes (initial sound-string of letters that follow the initial sound), and individual phonemes (sounds). Phonemic awareness can be practiced at home using a variety of games. Check out the resources below for some game ideas!
