Envisioning Nursing Futurities:

Language For New Futures

Language reflects lived experiences and theoretical stances. Language and discourse constitute identity, social location, and possibility, and reproduce power and dominance. Let us shine the light on language that anchors and feeds white supremacy and various forms of oppression in and through nursing. Let us interrogate, deconstruct, and revoke such ideologies in practice settings, the canon and hidden pedagogy of nursing education, lines of inquiry in research priorities, as well as the regulatory machinery of all dimensions of nursing. Only when we uproot this infrastructure will we truly advance nursing. While language evolves, this glossary can serve as a platform for collective dialogue and action.

Reading-to-Action twitter chat

As we think about the additional work that needs to be done in our discipline to build a more just, equitable future for nursing, we see merit in reading important works. But we also know reading is not enough. Join us for a Reading-to-Action initiative. Each text we choose will center antiracist, anticolonial, queer, feminist, or otherwise liberatory perspectives.

Our conversation will start with a twitter chat using the tags #UprootRacism and #TransformNursing, which will be followed up with small-group Zoom sessions with the intent of developing strategies and approaches for putting the ideas we've read about into clinical, research, educational, and policy practice.
