The Reading Intervention Hub

WELCOME TO MS. GALAZ'S READING INTERVENTION HUB!

Hello Vista Grande Families!

Here you can find helpful activities, tips and more to help all developing readers refine their skills while at home.

Depending on the grade and reading level of your reader, you will want to have them focus on one specific aspect of reading intervention to help improve their skills. On this page I have resources specifically for students 2-5th grade, with a heavy focus in reading comprehension, decoding, fluency, and reading retention.

If you have any questions or would like additional assistance with reading intervention, I will be available by appointment and email.

Decoding Material (2nd/3rd grade)

Syllable Types

There are SEVEN different types of syllables that occur in words in the English language. But why is knowing this helpful? Because, when a reader can recognize where to naturally separate a word by syllabication, they are better able to decode and actually read a new/challenging word.

These syllable types include: OPEN, CLOSED, CONSONANT -LE, DIPHTHONG, VOWEL TEAM, MAGIC -E, and BOSSY R.

Here you will find a guide sheet for each of the syllable types to help both you and your reader's better understand the syllables of the English language! Scroll through the seven PDF slides to the right to see each syllable type explained visually.

Four vs For vs Fore

The differences between HOMOPHONES, HOMOGRAPHS and HOMONYMS are challenging to remember, even for the most successful readers! Being able to distinguish when to pronounce/read a word in a specific manner can make all the difference when they are trying to understand a sentence. This also means, if they do not correctly pronounce the word, the entire meaning of the sentence could be changed, thus affecting their overall comprehension of what they just read.

Here I have created some guides to make sure the definitions for each of these tricky word types makes sense, as well as gives visual representations and examples for each definition. Make sure you scroll through each one as there are multiple slides per word type.

Enjoy!

Comprehension Material (4th/5th)

Elements of Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension is perhaps one of the most essential skills for student success in all grade levels.

A student's ability to comprehend, analyze, infer and summarize allow them to gain deeper understanding for what they have just read, and assists in retention of new material.

Reading Comprehension Bookmarks.pdf

Bookmarks

I created the eight bookmarks to the left to give students a visual representation of what each of the Elements of Reading Comprehension means, why they are all important, and how they can all be used to better understand and retain new information.

You can print these out or simply have them downloaded and handy so your reader can always remember the key elements of reading comprehension!

Reading Comprehension Activities

The worksheets below are just some of the resources we use in the Reading Room to help us better understand what we have been reading.

After completing a reading assignment, these worksheets help students explore key Reading Comprehension Elements that will allow their reading skills to greatly improve! Often times students are given writing assignment or short answer written questions after reading a text or passage and students feel stuck as to how they can organize their ideas. These worksheets give students a specific visual space to organize their thoughts, as well as provides the guided help they need in order to successfully retell, sequence, or find the main idea of a reading assignment.

C. O. P. S.

How to correct your writing

It is important for students to develop the skill of editing their writing; they begin to notice when spelling is incorrect, where there is improper or insufficient punctuation, and whether or not the organization of the sentence(s) makes sense.

Using the acronym C.O.P.S. can help students remember the key aspects of correcting their own writing- Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation and Spelling.

As a reminder to keep a look out for these four things, have students write the acronym across the tops of their papers!
