Today we would define catharsis as a release or relief of strong emotions. In the ancient world, catharsis was a physical practice to purify oneself.
While not mentioned by this term in the episode, upon researching the concept of not asking questions of your guests until you had served them the first result was "Xenia".
Xenia is the ancient Greek "rules" for hospitality which included that it was considered rude to ask questions of your guests before they had finished a meal.
