Skill Sunday grew out of our kids desire to connect with real-life know-how. This year, we set aside time for hands-on learning led by caring adults—building confidence, creativity, and community while trying something new.
This Sunday:
Lower School (4PreK–6th Grade): Knot Tying Basics- In a world where fine motor skills are decreasing in kids, we're going to take another chance on a hands-on life skill- knot tying!
Upper School (7th–12th): First Aid Part 2—Back by popular demand(literally, the youth that attended asked for this to happen again) this hands-on learning group will help youth stay safe and confident!
We need more adult helpers this Sunday. Follow the link below to help us out!
We need to share an important update about the playground.
CCNS has let us know that the playground has repeatedly been left messy after Sunday use. As a result, they have requested that it remain locked. We are still able to use it on Sundays, but only if we are able to leave it exactly as we found it.
This means:
All sand toys must be put back in the buckets.
Buckets must be returned to the shed.
No toys or materials should be left out(including tricycles).
The area must be fully cleaned before families leave.
If the playground continues to be left messy, we will lose access to it entirely.
We will be talking with the children about shared responsibility in Little Chapel. But this cannot rest on kids alone. Families must actively supervise and ensure cleanup happens before heading home.
This playground is a gift to our community. Keeping it accessible requires all of us to treat it with care.
Thank you for taking this seriously and helping us protect this shared space.
Have you been looking for an easy way to support Religious Education? Our Sunday SUUperhero role is one of the simplest, lowest-prep ways to help our program run smoothly. Superheroes assist with welcoming families, helping with check-in, making sure children and youth get to their groups safely, and then helping where needed.
Our program works best when many families share in small acts of volunteering. A handful of families have already stepped up multiple times this year, and we would love to invite families who haven’t had a chance to volunteer yet to consider taking a turn. Even signing up once helps keep RE strong and sustainable for everyone.
Thank you for helping make RE possible!
February’s Youth Night Out is heading to a University of Utah Gymnastics meet! We’ll meet at the church at 6:30 PM, walk together to the TRAX station, and ride up to the Huntsman Center to cheer on the Utes. We’ll return by TRAX and be back at the church around 9:00 PM. Please RSVP early so we can plan for tickets!
First Church has lots going on for families, kids, and youth. From Youth Night Outs and Community Dinners to Family Meetups, there’s usually something happening most weeks that’s especially welcoming for children, youth, and families.
To help keep everything in one easy place, we created our Worship Every Way calendar. Each age group has its own tab where you can see upcoming events and a quick guide to what Sundays will look like. You’ll always find the link at the bottom of our weekly newsletter—and it’s a great one to bookmark for easy reference.
Join us for our new monthly Community Dinner Nights! We’ll share a potluck meal, then break into multi-age activities: activities and games for kids, skill workshops for teens, and multiple programming groups for adults. Come for the food, stay for the connection!
We are looking to diversify our voices on Ritual Sundays, and would love children and youth volunteers to help as worship associates. We need musicians, singers, readers, greeters; any ways that you see an adult participate, a child or youth could as well. Look below for ways to start to participate!
Music: Does your child or youth play and instrument and would like to play a prelude? Or would they lilke to lead, "Come, Come"? Email David Owens to signup!
Chalice Lighting: Click Here to signup to light our chalice. Children or youth can bring their own chalice lighting words, or we can provide options!
Have something else your child or youth would like to helo with? Email Amanda Esko and let her know.
Do you like to jump in where you’re needed most? Our Sunday Superheroes are flexible helpers who fill in any gaps on Sunday mornings—whether that’s caring for little ones in the nursery, assisting in a classroom, or lending a hand wherever support is needed. Superheroes meet in the Little Chapel at 10:45 am to check in and find out where their superpowers will be most helpful that day. No cape required—just a willing spirit and a smile!
If you are in need of assistance or support during this time, please reach out in confidence to our Senior Minister, Rev. J Sylvan, at minister@slcuu.org, or to our Director of Religious Education, Amanda Esko, at dre@slcuu.org.
Open Sanctuary Hour, Every Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 pm
The world feels heavy these days, and sometimes you just need a quiet, sacred space to sit with all of it. Every Tuesday, we will open up the Sanctuary from 5:30-6:30 for quiet reflection, prayer, meditation, or soft conversation. At least one staff member or lay leader will be present at every Open Sanctuary Hour. Together, may we guide each other through the wilderness.
Social and Immigration Justice
Backpack and Luggage Collection: The Social Justice team is collecting good backpacks and rolling luggage with working wheels to donate to the Gail Miller shelter. (No duffle bags, please.) The backpacks and luggage can be used, but must be in good working condition. Please bring all items to the Social Justice table during Sunday coffee hour.
Women's Circle, Tuesday, February 17th, 5:30pm, Eliot Hall
Living with intention can mean slowing down, paying attention to the natural world, and aligning daily life with deeper values. Many people find that the moon’s cycles offer a meaningful framework for reflection, emotional awareness, and mindful living. Join our Women’s Circle for Living Your Moon, a guided exploration of the lunar phases and how the moon’s rhythms can support intention, gratitude, and self-awareness in everyday life.
Full Week Faith plans are daily activities for families to work on together and within the community. Each week, you will find a family discussion question, a chalice lighting, a journal prompt, an activity, and more. Full Week Faith plans are meant as a jumping-off point for families to engage in faith development together!
Weekly guide to what's happening in every age group! Different age groups are separated by tabs at the bottom, so please make sure to look there for your age group.
