Skill Sunday grew out of our kids desire to connect with real-life know-how. This year, we set aside time for hands-on learning led by caring adults—building confidence, creativity, and community while trying something new.
This Sunday:
Lower School (4PreK–6th Grade): Intro to ASL — fingerspelling, simple signs, and respectful ways to communicate with ASL interpreter Mary Palmer and Lizi MacLeod.
Upper School (7th–12th): Fiber arts — exploring weaving/crocheting basics and how making things can be mindful, useful, and fun with Jen Haertel and Beth DeJong.
If you have a special skill or interesting career skill and would like to help in a future month, let us know!
Calling all ghosts and ghouls! Our annual Trunk-or-Treat rolls in on Sunday, Oct 26 at 12:15 pm in the parking lot. Kids will collect treats and small prizes from car to car, and we’ll have pizza and crafts on the playground. Please bring your trunks and help us make the magic!
Join us for our new monthly Community Dinner Nights! We’ll share a potluck meal, then break into multi-age activities: activities and games for kids, skill workshops for teens, and multiple programming groups for adults. Come for the food, stay for the connection!
We are looking to diversify our voices on Ritual Sundays, and would love children and youth volunteers to help as worship associates. We need musicians, singers, readers, greeters; any ways that you see an adult participate, a child or youth could as well. Look below for ways to start to participate!
Music: Does your child or youth play and instrument and would like to play a prelude? Or would they lilke to lead, "Come, Come"? Email David Owens to signup!
Chalice Lighting: Click Here to signup to light our chalice. Children or youth can bring their own chalice lighting words, or we can provide options!
Have something else your child or youth would like to helo with? Email Amanda Esko and let her know.
Do you like to jump in where you’re needed most? Our Sunday Superheroes are flexible helpers who fill in any gaps on Sunday mornings—whether that’s caring for little ones in the nursery, assisting in a classroom, or lending a hand wherever support is needed. Superheroes meet in the Little Chapel at 10:45 am to check in and find out where their superpowers will be most helpful that day. No cape required—just a willing spirit and a smile!
We love our volunteers, and we want to make sure you feel the love too! Starting this fall, whenever you sign up for a Sunday SUUperhero slot or pitch in at an event, you’ll get a little thank-you from us. Plus, your name will go into a monthly drawing for a fun prize. The more you jump in, the more chances you’ll have to win—because helping out should come with a little extra joy!
In order We’re excited to share our new Worship Every Way calendar! This spreadsheet is your one-stop guide to everything happening at First Unitarian this year. Each age group has its own tab at the bottom, so you can easily find what’s planned for children, youth, and adults. And it’s not just for Sundays—you’ll also find details about upcoming events, family meetups, Community Dinner Nights, OWL classes, and more.
Check it out, bookmark it, and use it as a go-to resource as we move through this vibrant year together.
P.S. It will always be linked at the bottom of this site as well!
Grow in Spirit. Act with Love. That’s our theme for the year—and we can’t wait to explore it with you! Our Religious Education program at First Unitarian Church offers children and youth a space to wonder, learn, and grow together through engaging classes, community-building activities, and hands-on experiences rooted in Unitarian Universalist values.
Whether your family is brand new or has been with us for years, now’s the time to sign up! Registration helps us plan classes, pair teachers, and make sure every child has the best experience possible.
We are so incredibly fortunate to have our amazing playground structure for our kids and families to gather before and after church. All of this play, however, does require cleanup. We're going to talk about this in Little Chapel with the kids, but if your kids are playing on the playground, please encourage them to clean up the sand toys. Buckets for the toys are in the playground shed. It is the responsibility of EVERYONE to clean up the area. Thank you for helping your children learn to take on this responsibility for our community!
Open Sanctuary Hour, Every Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 pm
The world feels heavy these days, and sometimes you just need a quiet, sacred space to sit with all of it. Every Tuesday, we will open up the Sanctuary from 5:30 to 6:30 pm for quiet reflection, prayer, meditation, or soft conversation. At least one staff member or lay leader will be present at every Open Sanctuary Hour. Together, may we guide each other through the wilderness.
