Hockey University
Years ago, referee clinics used to be two days in duration. When Hockey Canada decided to move to one day clinics, an online portal called Hockey University was created. This e-learning does a great job of covering the basics with some engaging videos and text. Please make sure this prerequisite learning is completed before you attend your in person clinic.
The Clinic
The clinic itself will run from around 9AM-3PM with a break for lunch around noon. If you in the 15U clinic, a mandatory ice session will occur. Please bring a helmet, whistle and skates for this session. If you are in the level 2 clinic (16+) there is only classroom instruction.
The TEST
A test will conclude the clinic. This is a digital quiz completed on web based program called Socrative. Please make sure you bring a device with you. The test is meant to review the material that was covered. Your instructors will make sure you are prepared accordingly and are successful.
Post Clinic
At the clinic you will recieve two crests. The Hockey Alberta crest goes on the left chest and the Hockey Canada crest goes on the left shoulder. Please make sure you contact your Referee in Chief to ensure you are ready to be assigned games. Most centers will be using some type of assigning software that will require you to login to.
Equipment
Getting into reffing can be an expensive venture. Trying to find gently used gear is recommended. FB Marketplace is a great place to leverage. The following list of gear is required:
A helmet with a visor
Whistle that goes on your fingers
Jersey with crests-Hockey Alberta (Mandatory) Hockey Canada (Optional)
Black Pants- Can be track pants. Preferably not team branded.
Shin Pads are recommended
Player Skates
