iPad Race Scoring for US Sailing Clubs
Setting up your club Open the Settings tab to enter your club name, logo, address, and contact information. This information appears on all exported PDFs.
Adding boats Go to the Fleet tab and tap the + button to add boats one at a time, or import your entire fleet from a CSV file via Settings → Import Boats from CSV.
CSV format for boats:
Boat Name, Division, Sail #, Skipper First, Skipper Last, Rating, PHRF Cert (Y/N), Boat Type, Status
Adding courses Go to the Courses tab and tap + to add courses, or import from CSV via Settings → Import Courses from CSV.
CSV format for courses:
Course Number, Course Name, Wind Range, Distance, Bearing, Course Type, Start Type
Go to the Races tab and tap + to create a new race
Enter the race name, date, start time, division, season, and course
Tap Create — boats are automatically added from your fleet
Tap the race to open results
Tap Show Edit to enter finish times
Tap Recalculate to update all positions and points
Tap Export PDF to share results
Status codes:
Finished — normal finish, points calculated
DNF — Did Not Finish, 0 points, counted in fleet size
DNC — Did Not Come to start, 0 points, not counted in fleet size
DSQ — Disqualified, 0 points, counted in fleet size
Go to the Series tab and tap + to create a series
Set the number of seasons, races per season, drops per season, and qualification percentage
Races are added to a series from the Series detail view → Manage Races
Tap any boat in the standings to view their detailed race-by-race breakdown
From the boat detail view you can manually exclude races or force-include dropped races
Drop logic:
6 or more races in a season → 2 lowest scores dropped
5 races in a season → 1 lowest score dropped
4 or fewer races → no drops
Go to Settings → iPad to iPad Transfer
To send data: Tap Export All Data → share via AirDrop, email, or Files app
To receive data: Tap Import Data from File → select the exported JSON file
Duplicate entries (same sail number, course number, race name, or series name) are skipped automatically during import.
RegattaScoring uses PHRF Time-on-Distance handicapping.
Corrected Time = Elapsed Time − (Distance × Rating)
RegattaScoring uses the High Point Percentage system.
Points = 100 × (N − position + 1) / N
Where N = number of boats that competed in that division. First place always scores 100 points. Highest series score wins.
RegattaScoring now supports three handicap systems. Select the handicap system when creating or editing a race.
PHRF Time-on-Distance (default) Corrected Time = Elapsed Time − (Distance × Rating) The original RCYC standard. Best for races where all boats sail the same course distance.
PHRF Time-on-Time (new) Corrected Time = Elapsed Time × 650 / (550 + Rating) A time-based multiplier system. No course distance required. Better for mixed fleets with very different ratings.
One Design (new) No handicap applied. Corrected time equals elapsed time. Use for one-design fleets where all boats are the same class.
RegattaScoring now supports three scoring systems. Select the scoring system when creating or editing a series.
RCYC High Point (default) Points = 100 × (N − position + 1) / N Sum of race scores after drops. Highest total wins. This is the original RCYC standard.
US Sailing High Point Percentage (new) Series Score = (Sum of race scores after drops) / (Sum of max possible scores) × 100 Each boat's score is expressed as a percentage of the maximum they could have scored. Highest percentage wins. Follows the official US Sailing High Point Percentage rulebook definition.
US Sailing Low Point (new)
1st = 1 point
2nd = 2 points
3rd = 3 points
(each place adds 1 point)
DNF/DSQ = boats competing + 1
DNC = not scored
Series score = average of scored races after drops. Lowest average wins. Follows the official US Sailing Low Point Averaged system.
Open Fleet races score all active boats as a single group regardless of division.
To create an Open Fleet race:
Go to Races → tap +
Toggle Open Fleet Race to on
All active boats are added automatically across all divisions
Results are scored together as one fleet
The results table shows "Open Fleet Race" in the header and hides the division column. Points are calculated based on the combined fleet size.
A boat can be scored in a different division for a specific race without changing their permanent division.
To set a division override:
Open a race result
Tap Show Edit on a boat's row
Set the Race Division field to the override division
Hit Recalculate
The override division appears in orange with an asterisk in the results table. The boat's permanent division in the Fleet tab is not affected.
Unqualified boats now always appear below all qualified boats in series standings, regardless of their score. Previously a high-scoring unqualified boat could appear above qualified boats — this is now corrected.
Version 1.1 adds confirmation alerts before all destructive actions to prevent accidental data loss:
Deleting a boat — warns that race results will also be deleted
Deleting a course — confirms before removing
Deleting a race — warns that all results will be lost
Deleting a series — warns that standings data will be lost
Removing a boat from a race — warns that finish time will be lost
Why are my boats not showing up in a new race? Only Active boats in the matching division are added automatically. Check that your boats are set to Active status in the Fleet tab.
Why are my series scores not updating? Open the race results and tap Recalculate, then return to the series. Scores update based on the latest race calculations.
Why does a race not appear in my season filter? The race needs a Season assigned. Edit the race and set it to Spring, Summer, or Fall.
Can I use this app without an internet connection? Yes — RegattaScoring works entirely offline. No internet connection is ever required.
Is my data backed up? Data is stored locally on your iPad. Use Settings → Export All Data regularly and save the file to iCloud Drive or email it to yourself as a backup.
