Learning Through Restorative Approaches
5 Day Summer Training
While participating in this training I learned new approaches for supporting students social emotional learning. I worked with training participants in a small group setting to learn and explore effective strategies for helping students express themselves, listen to each other and build a sense of community. I have been able to apply the learned strategies to my weekly community circle instruction and support social emotional needs of my students more effectively.
Re-entry Committee Member
As part of the planning for the reopening of our school after covid closures, a re-entry committee was formed. I decided to join the committee to help our school experience a smooth back to school transition. As a member of the re-entry committee, I collaborated with administration and other school staff to support new school procedures and ensure a safe, supportive and productive 2020-2021 school year.
My responsibilities included contacting parents to share re-opening information, inquiring about remote and in-person learning choices, answering associated questions and addressing concerns. I also assisted with technical support for those interested in the remote learning option. Lastly, I shared the data and information collected with the committee. Being a member of this committee proved to be a valuable experience as I was able to connect with many families of our students not only families of my respective students. It was also very rewarding to reconnect with school staff after a long period of remote teaching.
Staff Newsletter
During the 2021-2022 school year I participated in organizing, writing, and distributing our monthly staff newsletter. My responsibilities included drafting a plan for the newsletter, presenting the plan to administration, and lastly collaborating with all school staff to collect newsletter information. The included newsletter was the first of the school year followed by monthly editions in which staff could submit photos of special events in their classrooms and share resources with colleagues. The newsletter proved to be an effective tool for keeping our school staff connected despite our many responsibilities and busy schedules. Several staff members complimented my efforts and stated that the newsletter was very helpful with keeping them in the know. I am happy to have been a part of the implementation of a newsletter and look forward to future projects.
Instructional Leadership Team
During the 2021-2022 school year I was also a member of the Instructional Leadership Team. As a member of this team, I participated in routine tasks including facilitating ILT meetings, analyzing data and actively participating in projects to strengthen core instruction. One of the projects I took part in was an instructional walkthrough. During the walkthrough I collaborated with the ILT team to examine instruction for the hallmarks of advance literacy. We visited classrooms, collected and analyzed data and participated in presenting the findings to teaching staff during a professional development session. This project boosted my confidence in participating in the facilitation of PD and collaborating with staff on a school wide level.
Being a member of this committee has given me the opportunity to witness the leadership skills of our administration team as well as their dedication to our school community. I definitely feel that my voice was always heard, and opinions of all involved were valued.
