Between 1942 and 1946, 48 Blue Hydrangeas were planted in a dedicated garden in solemn tribute to the loss of 48 Chilliwack Airmen during World War II. A 49th plant was in memory of eleven Royal Air Force crew who died in the crash of Liberator KK241 on Mt. Welch in 1945
The event organizers from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 295 Chilliwack and 879 (Earl MacLeod) Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association are grateful for the support shown by wing and legion volunteers; Roxanne Lush, vocalist; Charlotte Whaley, Fraser Valley Regional District; Anne Hails, Dickens; Mark Stone for the donation of Royal British Legion poppies; Lisa Minter for the donation of eleven blue hydrangeas; Sergeant John Guntner, CD RCAF (Retired); RCAF 12 Wing Shearwater and 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron Victoria BC for scheduling a CH-148 Cyclone flypast; RCL Br 295 Sergeant-at-Arms David Shavalier; and others for contributing to the success of this commemoration.

Because of the mountainous terrain it was not possible to recover the remains of the crew of KK241. They rest in peace between the summits of Mount Welch and Mount Still and are remembered at the Airplane Creek Memorial near Chilliwack BC and in their UK homeland. These eleven are also commemorated on panels at the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial in Ottawa, Ontario.
Aircrew trainees as well as military and civilian instructors and technical staff who lost their lives at British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) bases, and who have no known grave, are commemorated at the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial also known as the "Ottawa Memorial" on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Ontario.
