WHAT IS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD?
We define it two ways.
1. Textbook Definition: An international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education.
2. Our Definition: A nationwide competition where nerds from different schools gather to match wits and intelligence against one another in a wide array of events. Fifteen-person armies... er, teams, are assembled to vanquish rivals and earn shining medals and a trophy.
WHAT DO WE DO?
There are twenty-some odd events in Science Olympiad spanning a vast array of disciplines; every member is assigned 2-4 depending on their interests and experience. We then study, study, study, study, until all of the information slowly diffuses into our brains. On Competition Day (usually a Saturday in March), we then use our knowledge to ace every test given.
Studying is a long, arduous process, so we try to help you out in several ways: Every event has a student in charge, known as an Event Leader, whose responsibility is to help other people in the event study and supply them with the materials they need. We also hold after-school study sessions on selected Fridays throughout the year to give you a chance to work with your partners. These after school sessions will also count as a 6.5 class for 2.5 credits if you attend them all (which you should)! Food is provided at the study sessions to power all the rapidly learning minds there.
If we place within the top 8 schools at the regional competition, we then advance to the state competition, where our knowledge is tested even more thoroughly. Top-performing members at Regionals are selected to be on the State team.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN?
Let's face it: with larger class sizes, the quality of your education is significantly diminished. Science Olympiad comes to the rescue by supplementing your education with material both within the realm of your studies and beyond! Plus, studying is the key to success: some of those Science Olympians achieved perfect scores on their SAT's, while others have competed in the United States National Chemistry and Physics Olympiads. Savvy?
Besides studying, Science Olympiad is also a great opportunity to meet new friends who share a common interest with you: science. Through a short period of time, you create strong bonds between some of the most brilliant minds in the school. You also just might become one of the most brilliant minds yourself!
Still aren't convinced? From a more materialistic viewpoint, Science Olympiad is a nationwide organization, so membership looks impressive on college applications (especially if you perform well). It also doesn't hurt that you can win medals, ribbons, and a big, shiny trophy for the school :] Give it a try!
