The Department takes much interest in research and extension activities like conducting short courses and workshops for participants from interdisciplinary academic fields, holding student-seminars, arranging short-talks on current affair issues, organising state-level seminars, undertaking research projects and taking part in college-programmes aimed at development of social welfare. Departmental teachers are members of renowned bodies like the Indian Association for the Study of Population, IZA Institute of Labour Economics, Bengal Economic Association, North East Economic Association, The Econometric Society of India, C-Drasta and are actively involved in regular publications and other academic pursuits.
