Voice typing is a helpful accessibility tool that's available on Google Docs and in Google Slides speaker notes. It's a feature that's only available in Chrome browsers, and some aspects (like voice commands for editing, formatting, and punctuation) are only available in certain languages.

Note: If you're on a mobile device, you can type on the Google Docs app using your voice, however this isn't the Google voice typing tool (it's just a native feature built into your phone's keyboard).

Quick tip: If it's your first time using voice typing, you may need to grant Google Docs permission to use your microphone. A working, connected microphone is essential to using this feature.

Quick tip: To add punctuation, say the name of that particular punctuation mark to add it to the Doc. To add a period at the end of a sentence, for example, say "period." You can also say phrases like "new line" and "new paragraph" to format your document via voice typing.

If you need to correct a mistake while voice typing, move your cursor to where the mistake is located and add in any text you may have forgotten by speaking. You can also highlight any mistakes and speak to type over them.

I am running Firefox 76.0.1 (64-bit) on Windows 10. I am asked to prepare a document on Google Docs and they are suggesting using voice typing from "Tools" menu of Google Docs, but I can't find such an option in the "Tools" menu.

I had a bad problem with inflamed tendons in my right hand, so I even had trouble typing a quick email or Facebook/blog comment. I could use the voice input on my smartphone, but if I wanted to use my computer, it was a problem.

Often, I find it more efficient to use my keyboard to add punctuation/new lines as the text I am dictating is appearing on my document, instead of trying to use the voice commands, although you can edit the whole document when you have finished (see Step 10 - Editing Afterwards in Google Docs or in Word).

It's worth trying out the voice commands to see if they work for you (and in the future their function may be improved - here's hoping!), and of course if you are working on a tablet without a convenient keyboard you may find them valuable.

If you can play the files on a separate device, e.g. a handheld voice recorder/camera/phone or separate computer- especially with headphones attached - you can just dictate to Google Docs on your main computer as usual.

Tip - if you are recording audio or video to later transcribe, it helps to record in short clips and label them clearly with the subject and date (note that portable voice recorders may not register the date in the file as a camera would).

The Google Voice Typing does not do capitalization or punctuation and will just type the words spoken. The Talk&Type option will support the same punctuation rules and voice commands everywhere in the same way (full stop, new line, capitalization, punctuation, etc).
