ELCMM: An e-Learning Capability Maturity Model

Abstract:

The widespread applications of e-learning or technology-enhanced learning in academic institutions have led to a huge escalation in the development of e-learning evaluation models. Such models are focused on the assessment of e-learning systems at the expense of providing guidelines on how to improve the current e-learning practices. However, these models do not undertake a holistic evaluation approach to e-learning ystems. In this paper, we introduce a novel eLearning Capability Maturity Model (eLCMM) to inform the extent to the capability maturity of e-learning systems. The eLCMM utilises the ISO 25010 and 25012 standards in defining the required modelling artefacts to be utilised in evaluating aspects related to the organisation, the technology and the e-learner experience. This paper is mainly focused on the evaluation of e-learning pedagogical and technology-oriented concerns the respective enacted e-learning systems. This model adds a further building block towards improving the e-learner’s experience through the continuous feedback provided by the eLCMM implementation. However, adoption of this model needs further large scale case studies to assess its effectiveness in a step towards a universal model for assessing the capability maturity of adopted e-learning systems.
