Influencing a polarized and connected legislature, (with Matthew C. Leister and Birendra Rai) ; Games and Economic Behavior, Volume 142, 833-850, November 2023. -- [ Link ]
We investigate when an interest group can exploit increasing polarization between political parties to its advantage using legislators who are connected with each other in a network. We find that the impact of rising ideological or affective polarization between political parties on the interest group depends crucially on the relative influence of the parties.
When to seek expert advice? A simple model of borrowers with limited liability, (with Sukanta Bhattacharya) ; Mathematical Social Sciences, Volume 125, 113-120, September 2023. [ Link ]
If the information is inexpensive but not costless, is it always beneficial for the borrower to collect information regarding the outcome of a risky investment? We study a limited liability credit market where the borrower faces a trade-off between paying to learn about the project outcome or putting effort into the risky project. Our model provides an alternative explanation for the prevailing high rate of interest in the rural credit market, despite the presence of socially-motivated lenders.
Digital Privacy: GDPR and its lessons for Australia, (with Chongwoo Choe) ; The Australian Economic Review, Volume 56(2), 204-220, June 2023. [ Link ]
Australia's Privacy Act 1988 is under review with a view to bringing Australia's privacy laws more in line with the GDPR. We discuss some of the (un)intended consequences of GDPR, and how the GDPR can be refined and standardized to be more effective in protecting privacy without stifling the data‐driven competition. An ideal data policy should inform consumers about possible privacy costs in a transparent way while giving consumers a menu of opt‐in choices from which the consumers can self‐select.
