There is no teaching without learning and there is no learning without learners. My aim for being a teacher is ensuring that all learners are treated fairly, taught according to their educational needs to avoid judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree, and offering leaners the educational, emotional, mental, phycological, and financial (through sponsorships, social workers were needed, etc) support needed for effective learning.
With learners having different learning abilities and ways of understanding what is being taught, I always ensure that my lessons involve multiple teaching and learning modalities to accommodate learners preferred learning style. My teaching strategies include whole child approach because I consider not only the academic needs of the learners, but also their emotional, psychological, spiritual, and developmental needs.
Direct Teaching Approach is mostly used when a new topic is being introduced. First, the lesson is introduced in a way that will capture their attention, engage them, and get their minds curious with thought provoking questions like “what causes lightning?”. The learners are then told the objectives of the lesson followed by a build-up upon what they already know from previously acquired knowledge. The Integrated Teaching Approach will be used to connect what is being taught to what they know from other subjects. i.e. Mineral salts needed by our bodies learnt in grade 10 life sciences are elements from the periodic table learnt in physical science (calcium, magnesium, etc) for better understanding of the foundation. The lesson will be presented and developed by explaining concepts with the aid of examples that entails their day-to-day activities, illustrations (videos, pictures, etc), and/or practical applications of what is being taught. Learner-cantered approach is applied throughout the lesson by allowing the learners to share their knowledge, thoughts, and/or ask questions on the topic at any time. Individual, Interactive, and collaborative approach are used during the lesson as learners will have a fair chance of tackling activities alone and within a team. They will also be allowed to interact with one another and the teacher during the lesson. The understanding of learners will be checked through classwork’s, homework’s, quizzes, tests, etc.
I believe in evaluation of both teachers and learners. My learners will be given opportunities to evaluate me bi-weekly to see what I can improve on (pace, tone, etc) to make learning easier for them and I will evaluate them holistically and individually after every test. We both set goals, targets, and key performance indicators as benchmarks for evaluations. Good performance and behavior will be rewarded, appreciated, and celebrated while bad performance will be counselled through private talks, positive criticism, motivation, encouragement, and suggestions that will uplift the performance on the next test (extra classes and practice).
I strongly believe in personal and professional development. I will continue to attend workshops, webinars, and seminars that are aimed at enhancing skills needed for teaching and effective learning. During my spare time, I study free teaching courses on Udemy and watch YouTube videos that enhance my knowledge on the subjects I teach to equip myself better to be the best teacher my learners need. I value growth, empowerment, quality results, and feedback. My passion for teaching drives me to fulfill everything stated.
