I'm Raquel, a quantitative ecologist and modeler with a strong interest in marine ecosystems and fisheries. My research focuses on developing quantitative approaches to support ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) by integrating species interactions, environmental variability, and fishing impacts into predictive models. To date, I have worked with a range of modeling tools, including hierarchical mixed-effect models, spatio-temporal models, and both single-species and multispecies models, to address key questions related to managing fish populations under changing environmental conditions.
I did my BSc in Marine Sciences at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where I discovered my passion for fisheries sciences.
After my BSc, I worked for two years at the Applied Marine Ecology and Fisheries Research group, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where I investigated the reproductive biology of deep sea crustacean.
I did the International Master in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSEA). As part of this master I got to study at Ghent University (Belgium), University of Algarve (Portugal) and GMIT (Ireland). I did my dissertation on Atlantic cod sclerochronology.
After my MSc, I worked two years at the Future Oceans Lab, where I work on climate change adaptation in the fishing sector.
I was missing academia.. so I started a PhD at the Marine Institute of Newfoundland on ecosystem-based fisheries management.
After the PhD, I started a postdoc at the University of Washington on multispecies catch-at-age models to inform hake management
Enjoy the talk I gave at the Effects of Climate Change on the World's Ocean #ECCWO5, hosted in Bergen in April 2023.
Topic: Response of snow crab to ocean warming in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
