Fioricet is a prescription medication used to treat tension headaches. It is a combination drug that contains three active ingredients:
Butalbital: A barbiturate that helps to relax muscle contractions involved in a tension headache.
Acetaminophen: An analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer).
Caffeine: A central nervous system stimulant that improves the effectiveness of acetaminophen and helps to constrict blood vessels, reducing headache pain.
Uses
Primary Use: Treatment of tension headaches.
Off-label Uses: Sometimes prescribed for migraines or other types of headaches, although this is less common.
Dosage and Administration
Typically taken every 4 hours as needed, but should not exceed 6 tablets in a 24-hour period due to the risk of acetaminophen toxicity.
Must be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
