BATON ROUGE, LA. - In the wake of winning the first Indoor State Championship in February of this year, the Lady Eagles of Holy Savior Menard have made history by becoming the only program in Rapides Parish to ever capture the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field State Championships in the same year.
The LHSAA 2A State Track and Field Championships, which took place at historic Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU, concluded Friday afternoon with the Lady Eagles of Holy Savior Menard hoisting the first place trophy for only the second time in school history, their first since 2013. Tensions were high for the team and their fans as the Lady Eagles had posted their final points of the meet following the 800 meters with only 3 events remained to see if their valiant 91 point effort would hold up against Isadore Newman of New Orleans, who were in striking distance at 63. The points had been too close to call for the majority of the day, with both school battling back and forth to see who would come out victorious. However as the final race of the day, the 4 x 400 meter relay, ended and the final results were tallied the Lady Eagles came out on top in a 91 to 85 victory.
The championship was truly a team effort by the Lady Eagles with points coming from 5 of the 6 competitors, including a State MVP performance from A'Shyria Burns (junior) who scored 36 points for the team by placing 1st in the 100m hurdles, 1st in the 100m, 2nd in the Long Jump, and 2nd in the Triple Jump. This was the second consecutive MVP title for Burns at the State Outdoor Championships, and she was also the top point scorer in the Lady Eagles Indoor Championship effort as well. She successfully defended her 100m hurdle title, and her time of 14.35 ranks her as the second fastest in Louisiana in all classifications this season. After finishing runner-up in the 100m dash the previous two seasons, A'Shyria captured her first "fastest woman in 2A" title this year as well running a time of 12.18.
Camryn Harrison (junior) supplied the team with 30 points of her own, far outreaching her projected point total entering the meet, proving once again that no stage is too big for her. Projected to finish 3rd in the 100m hurdles, her time of 15.42 took 2nd place, and going into the 300m hurdles race ranked 7th ran a 47.08, a PR of over one second, to grab 2nd place for the team. She supplied 10 points to the team by defending her Pole Vault title with a vault of 10' 6", and nabbed another PR on the day with a 4th place finish in the Triple Jump, jumping 34' 6.25".
Carly Meynard (soph.) gave the team a much needed boost this season by gaining 18 points in the Shot Put and Discus, disciplines that the Lady Eagles were missing last season. In only her first trip to LSU in the Shot Put, Carly threw a State winning throw of 35' 3.25" adding a crucial 10 points to the team score. In her second throwing event of the day Carly finished 2nd in the Discus (8 points), which she qualified in last year but finished 6th. Her throw of 116' 7" was a PR of over 10 feet is now more than 13 feet further than any other throw in Holy Savior Menard history.
Olivia Marcantel (soph.) added 6 points to the Lady Eagles with her 3rd place finish in the Pole Vault. Returning to the State competition after failing to qualify in 2023, Olivia stepped up in a huge way with a vault of 10', narrowly missing 2nd place by 1 miss on an earlier height. As a sophomore she has many competitions in her future and she will continue to show out for the team.
Chesney Mathews, the lone senior competing for Lady Eagles at the State Meet this year, finished out the scoring for the Lady Eagles in the 800m race. Coming into the State Meet ranked in the 9th position, Chesney ran the race of her life achieving her first PR in the 800 since her sophomore season with a time of 2:31.24 which placed her 6th and added a crucial 1 point to the teams total. Chesney will continue her running career next year at Northwestern State University and Natchitoches, and she will go into her college career as a State Champion.
Kaylee Siebeneicher (7th) was the final competitor for the Lady Eagles, and as a 7th grader had an opportunity to gain crucial experience running against the best of the best in the state. Her 14:01 in the 3200m finished 9th place, but as the lone 7th grader in the field she will look to return next year and provide points for her team in hopes of repeating as State Champions.
Congrats to all the participants, coaches, and community members for this incredible accomplishment!
