Hello :D I am Esme, a 20 year old music student from Gloucestershire, and this is my deposit for musings on random bits of heritage I come across; some well known, some obscure, some important, some insignificant, and some that can be found in the most unexpected of places. I am in full time education and write articles for this site in my spare time, so please excuse the snail's pace at which this website is updated!
I am passionate about humanity's heritage, and my articles aim to reflect that passion by providing my personal perspective on pieces of history that I come across which capture my curiosity. My primary interests lie within medieval church architecture across the UK, and I am particularly drawn to monuments and carvings. Although I am not religious, I have a deep respect for our ancient church buildings and the historical figures, known and unknown, who have shaped and reshaped them as a living history of a settlement and its people.
The Church Focus section of this website provides an opportunity to zoom in on a particular historic church and give as comprehensive an overview as possible, taking into account historical, aesthetic, and personal observations and factors. The churches which I choose to cover are generally parish churches and are not necessarily of any particular note, but I value my ability to fall in love with any place, no matter how insignificant, and if there is a particular aspect of the space which has captured my interest, I believe its story deserves to be told. I do not seek to add anything to any established historic or artistic literature, as I am a total amateur and by no means an expert in any way, but instead my aim is to thoroughly document these wonderful pieces of our heritage and provide (relatively!) high quality photos, which are often nowhere to be found on the internet by the armchair church enthusiast.
I hope you enjoy browsing the site! Happy heritage hunting!
