Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who founded the indietronica collective Monotronic in 2016. What began as a creative vision quickly evolved into a collaborative platform built on unity and shared expression. He conceived Monotronic as a space where instruments intertwine and function as one living system. Rather than spotlighting individual virtuosity, the project emphasizes collective flow and emotional cohesion.

Elkholy’s creative depth is rooted in his academic background. He holds a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. His research explores how tropical foragers in Indonesia understand their environment, identity, and daily life within the rainforest ecosystem.

In Calcutta, he studied Indian music, exploring the structure of ragas and intricate rhythmic cycles. Later, he conducted two years of field research among the Orang Rimba tribe in Sumatra.
Life in the rainforest left a lasting imprint. Elkholy has described drifting to sleep each night amid a dense layering of insects, birds, and natural movement that felt like a living symphony. That sensory immersion shaped his fascination with polyrhythms and atmospheric soundscapes. Today, echoes of those layered environments can be heard in Monotronic’s fusion of indie rock, electronic textures, and global influences.
Originally from New York City, Elkholy now calls Los Angeles home. There, he transformed his garage into a recording studio, creating a dedicated space for collaboration, production, and experimentation.
The Release of Waiting for You
In January 2026, Monotronic unveiled Waiting for You, a genre-blending album that merges indie rock, pop, and indietronica into a polished, cinematic body of work. The release was accompanied by music videos for “Looking Away,” “Everything Moves,” “Sun Song,” “Photograph,” and “Kettle Song.” Three of these videos premiered at number one on VEVO.
The album features bassist Mohini Dey on “Close Enough” and legendary drummer Omar Hakim, known for his work with Daft Punk and David Bowie, who performed drums across the record. Hakim’s rhythmic presence adds both precision and warmth, elevating the album’s sonic depth. Critics have praised the project’s introspective lyrics and synth-driven production, noting its cohesive, reflective tone.
The visual components expand the album’s creative narrative. “Everything Moves” was filmed inside an escape room in Los Angeles, reflecting the song’s urgency and movement through fast-paced editing. “Kettle Song” brings together K-pop dancers, Samurai figures, and a massive kettle drum from a recent Godzilla film, blending fantasy and spectacle. Elkholy wrote every track on the album, many during time spent along the beaches of Tulum, Mexico, where reflection and solitude fueled the songwriting process.

Monotronic first captured widespread attention with its self-titled debut in 2019. The album earned praise from respected outlets such as Rolling Stone, Relix, Rock Cellar, and Hype Magazine. Since then, the collective has assembled a rotating roster of accomplished musicians who have worked alongside artists such as Daft Punk, Joe Jackson, Chic, Robert Randolph, The Spin Doctors, and Dweezil Zappa.
The band has performed at major New York City venues and prominent festivals, including Disc Jam, Meeting of the Minds, and MUSEXPO. In the fall of 2025, Monotronic embarked on a sold-out United States tour, performing in Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and two cities in Texas. Live performances emphasize the communal chemistry that defines the project.
Singles That Sustained the Momentum
Between major releases, Monotronic issued a steady stream of singles that strengthened its presence. “Kids of Summer” and “Buy Yourself a Dream” both debuted at number one on VEVO. Additional tracks such as “Just Another Day,” “Livin’ in a Lie,” and “In Between,” featuring Russel Graham on vocals, continued to expand the project’s reach.
“In Between” was praised by The Big Takeover Show for its blend of dance energy and pop sensibility. Rolling Stone described “Looking Away” as a festival-ready standout and highlighted the EP’s Tame Impala-inspired cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Obscure Sound called the cover stellar, while other outlets emphasized the song’s emotional tension and replay value.
Originally released during the pandemic, “Kids of Summer” was later reimagined with Omar Hakim and paired with a vibrant video filmed across Manhattan. Featuring skateboarders, breakdancers, psychedelic visuals, and Elkholy’s dog Snookie riding a skateboard, the video captured the vitality of New York summers. It premiered at number one on VEVO’s Incoming Indie playlist.
