RALEIGH AFGHAN REFUGEE ASSISTANCE, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is focused on the reunification of Afghan families who became separated as a result the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the resulting chaos in the evacuation of our Afghan allies.
We all saw the news around the fall of Kabul, and video of the chaotic scene at the airport. We're working with a young couple that was able to get through the barricades and be evacuated by air. Since he was engaged with work which would have made him a target of the Taliban, his continued presence in the county would have been dangerous. Fortunately, he and his pregnant wife were flown to the U.S. in just time for the birth of their child, and eventually settled in the Raleigh area.Other extended family members who were closely allied with U.S. forces, and thus in direct danger from the Taliban, were not able to get out through the airport. They had to travel overland to various neighboring countries, and live in differing states of insecurity, as they await approval for evacuation to the U.S. Our local refugee family, although now able to support themselves, is committed to helping these family members stay safe and subsist, while waiting for U.S. government to finalize visa approvals. The direct financial assistance we provide our local family is critical in these efforts, while we lobby for the extended family's safe and expeditious evacuation.
