How to Apply for Rakuten Mobile

For International Students in Japan

You can create a Rakuten member ID and password during the application process through the referral link.

Apply through the referral link

Step 1: Enter from the referral link

Please access the Rakuten Mobile official website from the referral link below.
Entry through the referral link is required to receive the campaign points.

Step 2: Choose your plan

Tap the application button and select Rakuten SAIKYO Plan.

Then choose one of the following:

New contract
MNP / transfer your current phone number
Add another line

Step 3: Log in with your Rakuten ID or create a new one

Log in with your Rakuten account.

If you already use Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Pay, or other Rakuten services, you can use the same ID.

If you do not have a Rakuten ID yet, you can create one with your email address in just a few minutes.

Step 4: Choose your SIM type

You can choose either a physical SIM or an eSIM.

Physical SIM
A SIM card will be delivered to your address in about 3 to 5 days.
It can be used with many SIM-unlocked smartphones.

eSIM — recommended
No delivery is needed.
You can start using it soon after your application is completed.
It works with iPhone XS or later and many Android smartphones.
Same-day activation may be possible.

Step 5: Complete identity verification

Download the my Rakuten Mobile app.

Then follow these steps:

Open the app
Go to procedures / application steps
Select identity verification
Choose smartphone IC chip verification
Scan the IC chip of your ID document with your smartphone

You may be able to use one of the following documents:

Residence Card
Special Permanent Resident Certificate
My Number Card
Japanese driver’s license

Hold the document near the NFC area on the back of your smartphone and follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 6: Enter your payment information

Register your payment method.

A credit card is recommended.
Japanese debit cards may also be accepted.
Visa and Mastercard are supported.
Some overseas-issued cards may also be available.
Bank account transfer may also be possible.

Step 7: Activate your SIM and set up Rakuten Link

After your application is approved, follow the instructions to activate your SIM.

For eSIM, scan the QR code and activate it.
For a physical SIM, insert the SIM card and follow the app instructions.

Do not forget to download the Rakuten Link app.
You can use Rakuten Link for free domestic calls in Japan, subject to conditions.
