This sculpture was made to remind us of the connection we have to nature. We will never be able to live without nature. We often confuse that truth by believing nature can't be there without us. All the things we have done to hurt the nature around us and still it prevails. But have we gone too far? Do we need to start giving back?
Just as the sculpture, nature is strong but yet it's fragile. It's big but if you deliberately try to ruin it, you can. We need to take care of our environment and be responsible for our actions. We are in control… for now
At 25 years of age I fullfilled an old dream of mine by going to a folk High School in Denmark. I am a young artist from Iceland and I heard about the school system in Denmark a long while ago. I know it is a tradition in this country to evolve your skills in your own time and to enjoy the calm before the storm. I certainly enjoyed my time at Branberg højskole the spring semester of 2024 where I used my skills to make something I'm deeply proud of. I needed this time to get to know myself more to feel at peace when I felt like I wasn't productive. But many would say that building a two meter high sculpture and a three meter high kiln around it could be called pretty productive.
200kg of clay, more than 500 bricks, 900 degrees, 3 months and blood sweat and tears later....
Hand mixed scraps of clay with a lot of chamotte. Modelled in the shape of a tree by rigorously adding on the height every day as it dries upwards.
