Raj Devarajan

Global Medical Monitor at Cristcot

Raj Devarajan grew up in India with a strong sense of direction. While many teenagers were still deciding on their plans, he had already entered Madras Medical College at the age of fifteen. This early start reflected the determination and focus that would remain consistent throughout his life and career.

Training Across Three of America's Best Universities

After graduating from medical school, Raj moved to the United States to continue his medical education. He completed residencies in adult psychiatry at Yale University, child psychiatry at Harvard University, and internal medicine/gastroenterology at Tufts University.

When his fellowship at Tufts ended in 1994, Raj had completed training at three of the nation’s leading universities. The experience provided him with a broad clinical foundation and helped him understand the behavioral and psychological factors that often influence physical health.

Thirty Years of Practice, One Procedure at a Time

Raj Devarajan, MD, founded Middlesex Gastroenterology, PC in 1994. Over the next 29 years, he developed one of the busiest gastroenterology practices in Massachusetts. By the time he retired from clinical medicine in 2023, he had performed more than sixty thousand endoscopic procedures.

Earlier in his career, Raj founded the ERCP program at Emerson Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. This specialized procedure is used to treat conditions involving the bile ducts and pancreas. Establishing the program required medical expertise and the ability to guide a new initiative through a hospital system.

Raj worked closely with Emerson Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Yale New Haven Medical Center. Throughout these professional relationships, he earned a reputation for consistently following through and delivering results.

Building Institutions, Not Just a Practice

In 2005, he established ASC Middlesex Endoscopy Center, LLC, to provide patients with efficient outpatient care. He served as the facility's President until 2023. This effort reflected a pattern that appeared throughout his career: identifying unmet needs and developing practical solutions.

Raj's leadership extended beyond his own organization. He served as President of the Medical Staff at Emerson Hospital from 2015-2017 and as a Board member from 2015-2019. He also served as Past President of the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association and the American Association of Gastroenterologists of Indian Origin, helping guide both organizations at important stages of their development.

In addition to healthcare, he founded several companies in other sectors, reflecting an interest in building organizations and pursuing new opportunities.

Industry Recognitions and Accomplishments

Raj has served as a speaker for Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Forest Pharmaceuticals, and AstraZeneca. He has also worked as a consultant for Boston Scientific and Pentax Corporation.

He served on the Medical Advisory Boards of Cristcot Corporation and Allurion Corporation.

Raj's commitment to education extended beyond the medical community. Through television interviews, he explained common gastrointestinal diseases in ways that viewers could understand and apply to everyday life.

Among his accomplishments, he holds a share of a patent for an HCA drug formulation that has been tested worldwide and is currently awaiting FDA approval. If approved, the treatment could become an important addition to available therapies.

Life Beyond Medicine

Outside of medicine, Raj enjoys a variety of interests, including golf, tennis, chess, bridge, and skiing. These activities have provided balance throughout a career that often involved long hours and significant responsibility.

As the father of two adult children, he considers parenthood one of the most rewarding experiences in his life. He also believes in supporting charitable causes and helping create opportunities for others.

One of his notable contributions was support for a school in India. He also volunteers at the Acton Food Pantry, where he helps address local community needs and remains connected to the people around him.

A Career Built on Depth and Expertise

Today, Raj Devarajan serves as Global Medical Monitor at Cristcot. In this role, he applies his clinical knowledge and regulatory experience to evaluate and advance drug development programs.

The position allows him to use decades of medical experience in a broader setting while continuing to contribute to the future of healthcare. From his early days as a 15-year-old medical student to his current work in pharmaceutical development, he has remained committed to deeply understanding challenges and addressing them with purpose.
