Project Summary
In the conventional technology, manufacture of solar grade silicon (SOG-Si) is carried out by the path – smelting of quartz to metallurgical grade Si (MG-Si) in an electric arc furnace (EAF) and then refining of the MG-Si to produce SOG-Si by chemical vapour deposition process (Siemens process). However, this conventional technique is not environmentally friendly due to the loss of energy-contained off-gases (SiO and CO) in EAF and use of toxic additives in Siemens process. Thus, we are proposing a low cost and environmentally friendly alternative where we will use plasma enhanced reduction of locally available silica (quartz) using atmospheric pressure microwave plasma which is both efficient and clean.
