In the Lower School, everyone can't wait for Ms. Suzi day! The PTA has sponsored weekly concerts for every class in the Lower School, and the whole building enjoys the music of the wonderful, warm Ms. Suzi. The residency wraps up with the end-of-year concert in December.
For our self-contained classrooms, the beloved Ms. Jill and her team of artists and puppeteers bring joy with Singing Winds.
In her own words: "Founded in 2011, The Singing Winds has been a vibrant force in the Kensington community, offering multilingual storytelling performances and folk art festivals that showcase the traditions of immigrant residents. Through folklore, music, dance, and crafts, The Singing Winds creates a space where cultural heritage is honored, shared, and celebrated.
At its core, The Singing Winds is about more than just performances—it’s about building connections. By creatively using public spaces, the organization fosters relationships among neighbors, encouraging dialogue that transcends language barriers and cultural divisions. Whether through a mesmerizing dance performance, the rhythm of traditional music, or hands-on craft-making, every event is an invitation to explore the richness of Brooklyn’s diverse communities.
The impact of The Singing Winds is felt deeply by those who participate. Families gather to hear stories passed down through generations, artists find a welcoming platform for their work, and audiences leave with a deeper appreciation for the traditions of their neighbors. These programs not only preserve heritage but also nurture understanding and unity in an ever-changing urban landscape."
For 2nd through 5th graders at PS 230, their weeks with Creative Stages are always one of the most exciting parts of the year! Residencies are tailor made to work with the grades levels, their curriculum, and their teachers. Subjects have included puppetry, folk tales from around the globe, and even Shakespeare.
Each residency works toward a performance, where families are invited to come see what their children have built with Creative Stages. Far from a standard play, these performances are collaborative and creative, and it is clear that the children have been learning to work together at every moment. At last year's 4th grade Folk Tale performance, parents watched (amazed!) as Mr. Albert lead an entire grade of typically wiggly and loud kids in a quiet, focused two minutes of meditative quiet. They calmed and centered themselves, as they did each week, taking both their play and themselves seriously. The joy and pride they felt in their acting was beautiful.
