Since 1873 the mission of the California State Grange has been to serve, steward and teach the virtues of the land to our children and community. We maintain our commitment to grassroots advocacy, supporting farmland preservation, farm development, community service, sustainable and regenerative agriculture, and the consumer’s role in the food production system.
The National Grange was established in late 1867 in Washington DC with the primary aim of giving American farmers a political voice in the aftermath of the Civil War. Originally named “The Patrons of Husbandry,” its founders, including Oliver Kelly Hudson who worked at the Department of Agriculture, convened farmers for educational and social purposes. Hudson, witnessing post-war agricultural practices, spurred the Grange’s growth into a powerful lobbying force, advocating against monopolistic practices of railroads and grain elevators, and promoting agricultural education and cooperative purchasing.
Although its early lobbying efforts have evolved, the Grange remains a significant cultural institution in communities today, focusing on agricultural and rural community development.
Rainbow Valley Grange (RVG) constructed in 1947 (completed in 1948) through community effort, initially served as a town hall and gathering place for mutual learning. For nearly 80 years, the RVG has been integral to Rainbow Valley's community life.
