Rahala Formation History
Members of a Rahala team from Sohag Governorate, they had the same passion to change society using different arts, especially theatre. The beginning was in 2011, and after the spread of the cultural movement in society, the team began presenting shows in Sohag Governorate and it spread to the rest of the governorates with the same vision and goals. The team’s name has changed more than once, but in the end, we chose in 2016 the name Rahala Arts Team, a name that carries the meaning of traveller because we are always on the move, presenting theatrical performances everywhere inside or outside the governorate, whether it is an equipped theatre or a popular square, as art is our engine.•
The team (Rahala Centre for Arts and Training) was announced in 2023•
The number of participants in the team after its formation was 7 individuals who came together on a clear vision and goal, and over the past years the strength of the team changed until the number of participants in 2016 became approximately 30 participants, but now the number of participants in the team is 90 young men / women from the age group 18 - 35 years old, more than 50% of whom are girls•
The team contributes to societal change through•
Artistic performances: The team presented more than 70 theatrical works, in addition to various arts, and discussed various issues such as promoting peace, equality, education, health, acceptance of others, supporting people with disabilities, climate change, and combating gender-based violence such as female genital mutilation and child marriage. Etc., despite the difficulty of discussing these issues in Upper Egypt communities, and the offers reached more than fifty thousand people from the various governorates of Egypt.•
Rahala is a free, independent team that is not subject to any institution. This helps us in presenting true art that expresses our vision without any guidance. Upper Egypt in general and Sohag Governorate in particular is still in cultural and artistic need.•
The Rahala team relies on the empowerment methodology, as team members are trained to be trainers capable of training others to create other teams to expand cultural and artistic knowledge within Upper Egypt.•
The team is led by Abanoub Gerges.
