Treat your ears to this elusive and diamantine raga
There is something so precious and beautiful about Khem Kalyān that no words can do justice in describing it, no matter how many flowery adjectives I choose to employ. And there is something even more precious about this calm and thehrāvapurna (restful/tranquil) interpretation of Khem Kalyan by Vid. Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande that is personally close to my heart. At this point, my advice would be to stop reading this post, hit the play button and close your eyes to experience true inner peace.
Vid. (Dr.) Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande - Raag Khem Kalyan
Balamava (Vilambit Teentaal)
Piharava Maikain Dou Batain (Drut Teentaal)
The above performance is my refuge in winter storms. Listening to it is like sitting under the stars, letting their faint light brush away, note by note, every ounce of pain, stress and sorrow that I am feeling in the moment. This performance is 40-odd minutes of forgetting everything else and going into reveries of deep contemplation. The opening alāp (free-tempo exposition of the rāga) has a meditative quality to it. It feels like exploring the vast, wide universe through sound, and then coming back home each and every time her voice comes back home to the shadj (Sa).
