When I started searching for their duets, the first one I could find was from the film, Shri Krishna Bhakti (1955). The song is of course not popular at all. Chitragupt was the composer of their first duet. Later S N Tripathi offered her duets with Rafi in Hatimtai and Panna, both in 1956. The song from Hatimtai, Jane Wale Khuda Ki Rehmaton Ka is good.

And of course, her duets with Rafi under the baton of other first rung composers during the same period. While most of the composers chose her due to the similarity of voice with Lata Mangeshkar, a few composers opted for the pair, Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor instead. It would be a good idea to cover the later pair of singers someday!

Both were god gifted singers and complemented each other very well. Though they could have sung duets across various genres, barring a few exceptions, most of their songs are peppy, catchy, exuding enthusiasm. The teasing songs, Chhed Chhad songs and so on. In the late 40s, however, they had a few songs in a melancholy mood. I also gathered that the majority of the songs picturised on Johny Walker were duets and many of those were sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

For the next couple of years, Chitragupt and Hansraj Behl recorded a number of their duets for the films, Hamara Ghar, Hamari Shan, Veer Babhruvahan and Khamosh Sipahi. Let me add a song from one of these films,

Yes,

A perfect fit to the theme. I dropped it as the other duets (from society and ek ke baad ek) won.

Thank you for adding it. The movie is perhaps best known for Suman Kalyanpur solo, Chhodo chhodo mori baiyan saware

Anup,

This is an excellent post mapping Rafi-Geeta Dutt duets. Without your detailed survey we would not have realised Chitragupta composed more duets for them than any other music director. In general perception we think of OP Nayyar for their duets. It is sad that OPN gave her up for unmusical reasons. Coupled with her personal problems her career and her life came to an early end.

Geeta Dutt and Rafi Sahab had a lot in common. Two voices which could express a hundred emotions, be it pathos, love or romance, despair, frustration, patriotism, devotion, courage, determination, mischief, comedy, mock, philosophy or preaching. Two of the most revered singers in the history of cine music; they continue to rule the hearts of genuine music lovers till date. When we speaks of Geeta-Rafi duets instantly we think of so many well known music director names with whom the singing pair had sung some evergreen melodious duets. There are at least 80-90 Rafi-Geeta duets that are famous and popular which they sang under the baton of music maestros like O.P. Nayyar, S.D.Burman, Chitragupt, N. Dutta, Vasant Desai and others. Now let us recollect one by one.

This is a wonderful and thought provoking article. Surely if Geeta dutt had been less troubled in her own life her output would be much more than 1200 odd songs . She added her own different colour to the songs she sang, mostly for SDB and OPN, in solos as well as duets with rafi. A few more songs that are worth mentioning here are :

Thanks again Walijah Sahab and the rafi site to remember the glorious days of hindi film music which definitely belongs to golden period. All this credit goes to the administrator of this website. Hats off to you sir.

A very pleasant article on two great singers. The article is as light as feather but at the same time heavier than the elephant. This time you have written on the topic of Geeta Ji and Rafi Sahab whcih is very much praise worthy. The duets mentioned in the article are excellent and belong to the golden age of Hindi film music. I do not have words except to praise your articles.

Enjoyed reading a very well researched article.

Geeta Dutt had charm in her voice had distinct qualities of naadaniyat and sharaarti.

Rafi and geeta have given some light hearted duets that are evergreen.

Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar have sung the highest number of the songs / duets, 78 numbers, under the music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal, in the span of 17 years starting from 1963 to 1980.

Mohammed Rafi and Shamshad Begum sang almost 160 duets together in Hindi Films. Their first duet together was with Zohra Bai Ambala Wali Chotisee ek banayenge naiyya from Hamara Sansar (1945) with music scored by Pandit Govindram. Some of their best known duets were composed by Naushad and O.P Nayyar. While Naushad gave them the folksy O ghadi wale ghadi dheere haank re (Mother India, 1957) and romantic Mohabbat chumme jinke haath (Aan, 1952), O.P Nayyar on the other hand gave them the westernized Thoda sa dil laga ke dekh (Musafirkhana, 1955) and heart-stopping Leke pehla pehla pyar (CID, 1956). Infact, Leke pehla pehla pyar arguably remains their most popular duet together.
