RENACIMIENTOS
The concert title, Renacimientos, which means “rebirth” in Spanish, is used to refer to the Renaissance. These “renacimientos” or rebirths look to the times when the guitar and its predecessors flourished. These are the lute and vihuela of the Renaissance, the chitarra of the 19th century, and the modern classical guitar.
Renacimientos will begin with the Six Lute Pieces of the Renaissance, a series of pieces by Italian composers that were transcribed for the guitar by Oscar Chilesotti, a guitarist and musicologist. It is followed by the Rossiniana no. 1, one of the larger works of the great Italian guitarist, Mauro Giuliani. The Rossinianas by Giuliani contain themes of arias from famous operas by Gioachino Rossini which are elaborated by Giuliani with variations and his orchestration for the guitar. The Rossiniana no. 1 presents arias from the operas Otello, L’Italienne à Alger, and Armida.
The second part of the concert will start with three of the twelve etudes by Heitor Villa-Lobos, who was one of the many composers that elevated and revolutionized guitar composition and technique in the 20th century. It is followed by Geminiden, composed in the image of the meteor shower called the Geminids, by Agustín Castila-Ávila, an Austria-based Spanish composer whose works are also innovative. He uses microtones and extended techniques to represent the colors and sounds of the Geminids.
The concert ends with Tres Piezas Españolas, one of the more famous works of one of the pillars of Spanish nationalist music, Joaquín Rodrigo, also known as the composer of the famous Concerto de Aranjuez. It is in three movements, in the style of Spanish dances, the Fandango, Passacaglia, and Zapateado.
