My name is Gwen and I started Radio Scramble in September of 2021 in my first year at Acadia University. I grew up listening to independent radio and I've directly seen the amazing impacts it has on communities and individuals. Having my radio show definitely got me through the first year of university -- especially the second semester. It was a weekly constant that I knew I could rely on to escape from writing papers. We were small but mighty in the first semester, only having 4 shows airing a week on the station, and we only got mightier in the second semester. There was a faculty strike at Acadia that left us without classes for over a month. A lot of my friends turned to the radio to keep themselves entertained and invest some time and energy into something. We essentially ran the station ourselves with no guidance and no money to throw around.

In May of 2022, I became the director of the station, with the previous executive board dropping off. My friends and I spent the summer brainstorming about how we could make Axe Radio better and actually reach an audience this year. While we were brainstorming, I had the opportunity to continue Radio Scramble over the summer on Maker Park Radio, a community online streaming radio station based in my hometown of Staten Island, NY. I got to use some sick equipment, and help out with their summer events like Punk Rock Mini Golf. Everyone there is so wonderful and hardworking, so I just always have to give them a big shoutout (makerparkradio.nyc).
