Radio France has its headquarters at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique, a circular building designed by the architect Henry Bernard (architect)and inaugurated in December 1963 by President Charles de Gaulle, which stands beside the River Seine in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. In addition to housing Radio France's central services and the studios of several of its channels, the building is home to the Muse de Radio France, a museum of radio and television broadcasting and recording techniques. The building caught fire in October 2014.[2]

Beyond its primary profession which is to make radio, Radio France works on many political, social or cultural projects. When the news so requires, Radio France stations resort to event programming, which is no longer subject to the program schedules. These events, whether political, economic, societal, cultural or sporting, can be found in the pages retracing the annual chronologies of the radio media.

In 2016, Radio France's programs were broadcast in RNT ( DAB +) over the Paris region via an experiment. In 2019, the CSA allocates to all the national frequencies of Radio France, via a call for tenders procedure, broadcast in DAB +. This technology mainly aims to allow better sound quality, the addition of data synchronized or not with the radio (scrolling texts, images, information, websites, etc.) and a lower broadcasting cost than that of FM.

Since 2006, Radio France has produced its programs entirely in digital and since 2012 has offered numerous programs in podcast in MP3 format.[14] From 2014, faced with the boom in the consumption of videos on the Internet, and the development of the use of tablets or smartphones, Radio France introduced the concept of "enriched radio" which consists of filming the studio during the recording some radio broadcasts. The video is then put online live (in streaming ) on the station's website or inserted into a video catalog so that it can be viewed after the broadcast on air.

I listen to a lot of podcasts about a lot of different stuff and I want to find one in French to start listening to but about a random topic like true crime or gossip not specifically for learning French. Any recommendations?

With the rise of podcasting, a community of creators is booming: independent hosts and studios are inventing new forms of storytelling across all genres, from fiction to nonfiction, news, culture, and business. In France, podcasting remains a niche ecosystem where only a few studios manage to break through to the international market. Sounds of New York is an invitation to nurture a dialogue with both the major media firms and the independent podcasting community in the United States, where the market is already developed, and a multitude of creators, studios, platforms, advertising agencies, and types of media serve as inspiration for the budding French podcasting scene.

In 2024, Sounds of New York will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the American podcasting ecosystem through meetings with industry leaders based in New York; provide inspiration to French podcast creators on writing podcasts; and promote French podcasters.

During the five days spent in New York, participants will benefit from a presentation on the podcast ecosystem; visits and meetings with platforms, media, studios, and producers; and a cocktail party networking event where French participants pitch their projects and meet with New York professionals.

Podcasting isn't just an English phenomenon. The scene has been growing in Quebec and France for years. We asked our colleague Xavier K. Richard from Radio-Canada to give us a list of his favourite podcasts:

Henry Michel is the host of the most creative and confusing podcast in the whole francophony. Originating from Cannes, France, the show is partially a reunion of old friends and half funny and part creative games with a nostalgic bent.

This show is the Rolls-Royce of French public radio this summer, starring the iconic duo Marc Labrche and Anne Dorval in a lovely, unfettered dialog. Because the show is also broadcast on radio, the podcast had a strong presence on the iTunes charts this summer.

The first episode of the first podcast produced by Slate.fr is a first-person confession about stalking neighbours. First the stalking, then the obsession, the intrusion, and so on. This captivating podcast is based on true stories with minimalist production. It could, along with Crackopolis (ARTE radio, 2014) and La fois o (Radio-Canada, 2013; Full disclosure: I was one of the producers), point to an emerging aesthetic that could become a style of radio storytelling la franaise.

What I like about this Parisian podcast about tech and digital culture is that it's full of revelations. If you can make it through the 2 hour episodes, you'll find yourself thinking: "My God, this is genius." While the group gathers a strong community around their essays about Snapchat, connected car and elegance on the Internet, they are exploring, like another company called Binge Audio, to find a successful business model for their podcast.

The radio producer Catherine Gillet needs only a few minutes to make you jump into someone else's life. She gives you access to her subjects' deepest thoughts about work, family, friendship, and identity. This short radio series is worth a binge-listening. In each story, the subjects get younger than the episode before, which is moving us into a larger storyline of navigating a lifetime in reverse.

Learn French With Alexa has been a website and podcast for a long time. In early 2022, the podcast had a major rehaul. It now seems to be more about French culture than listening to/learning the language. Many of these podcasts do a deep-dive into one French word or expression.

When you access them on the Inner French website, the podcast episodes include a relatively thorough summary in French, as well as links to sources that are referenced (which could be a great way to also practice reading in French, if a topic appeals to you!). On the other hand, to get a transcript, you have to create a free Inner French account.

The concept of this podcast is a bit unusual. A Frenchman, Louis, presents a very short news story or dialogue two times, in slow French. Then, he breaks it down, defining and repeating each word or phrase.

I love poetry, so before listening to this podcast, from French learning site French Today, I was so excited about the idea of getting to listen to a French poem and then learn a bit about vocabulary and maybe grammar through it. But it turns out that each French Poem Readings podcast is simply the poem read twice, slowly and clearly. On the website, you can find the transcript and an English translation, as well as additional learning material.

This roughly tri-weekly podcast is very much in line with the modern-day trend of social media figures like vloggers letting you into their lives (Fittingly, the podcast has its own Instagram account).

This podcast is in English but is actually focused specifically on French. In some episodes, Jessica (the same French native-speaker who hosts French Voices) will focus on vocabulary or grammar, while other episodes look at topics like how to stay motivated when learning French, or travel tips.

Hosted by Kerstin Cable and Lindsay Williams, two enthusiastic polyglots, the podcast explores things like how to memorize vocabulary about ideas, what an indigenous language really is, and much more.

Bonus: Although Mourir Moins Con is for the general French public, I personally think its host speaks clearly and at a reasonable speed, which makes it an easier listen for French learners than many other French podcasts.
