Radio Rock's broadcasting began on 1 January 2007, at 0.00, with the official spoken programs beginning on 15 January 2007. The first song that the station played was Metallica's "Master of Puppets". Radio Rock's hosts are mostly former Radio City and YleX personnel like Klaus Flaming, Jussi Heikel, Aki Linnanahde, and Jone Nikula. Radio Rock's official mascot in its commercials is called "rockrooster."

The Boat That Rocked: Radio Caroline, broadcast at sea from the vessel Mi Amigo, was one of the many pirate-radio stations that anchored off the coast of England during the 1960s. The BBC favored a bland if nourishing diet of news, information, light entertainments and children's programs. In other words, the rock 'n' roll revolution that was spreading like wildfire in the United States had been all but banished from the British airwaves.

But for a group of rebellious, rock-loving disc jockeys, such restrictions were merely a hurdle. Many of them took to the seas, hunkering down on old fishing ships anchored off the Eastern coast of England; from there, they broadcast programs built around the illicit tunes of bands like The Hollies and The Rolling Stones.

Richard Curtis, director of the new film Pirate Radio, which is based on these events, was an 8-year-old boy confined to a posh boarding school when he first heard the broadcasts. While he wasn't allowed to listen to music during the day, he remembers hiding a radio under his covers at night .

In fact, the prime motivating force behind the pirates wasn't some kind of rock 'n' roll evangelism; it was good old-fashioned profit: American and Irish entrepreneurs ran the two biggest stations, trying to sidestep Britain's refusal to grant radio licenses to commercial broadcasters.

Yet the music had made its mark. One month after the law took effect, the BBC launched its first pop station. And in a strange turn of events, many of the shipwrecked DJs went to work for their former nemeses at the BBC. After all, it would be six more years before Britain allowed any commercial radio stations in the country.

The Marconi Award honors radio stations and on-air personalities for excellence in broadcasting in 20 categories, and the 2017 winners will be announced September 7 during an awards ceremony in Austin, Texas.

Bad Omens' alt-metal breakout "Just Pretend" got its initial boost as a viral TikTok song, but now, it's a bona fide radio rock hit. Back in March, the song from Bad Omens' 2022 LP, The Death of Peace of Mind, went to No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, and it continues to have a tremendous presence on both SiriusXM stations and terrestrial rock radio.

Ironically, the song was initially written as a literal parody of a radio rock hit. In a new interview with NME, Bad Omens vocalist-songwriter Noah Sebastian revealed that he wrote the chorus for "Just Pretend" in order to prove how easy it was to write a "butt-rock" style song. Ironically, he ended up loving the hook and decided to earnestly flesh it out for the record, and now, it's become exactly what Sebastian was poking fun at.

"At the time I was frustrated with people in my ear talking about, 'Oh, you need to focus on the radio. And you need to do [SiriusXM station] Octane' and this and that," Sebastian said of his approach to writing "Just Pretend."

"So with 'Just Pretend' it started as this ironic butt-rock song. Even the way I was singing in the demo I was doing this exaggerated bravado. As silly as the vocal sounded I was like, 'This is actually a really great chorus.'

"So last night we just realized that a song that was written to poke fun at how easy it is to make radio rock is now No. 1 on the radio rock charts. It's the most ironic full-circle moment this band will probably ever have."

The division of subgenres progressed well in the 70s. Glamrock, with its androgynous stars found its way onto the big stage, capturing the minds of many. Above all others the hard rock and progressive rock subgenres grew the fastest with art rock not far behind. This rock scene was closely connected to the hippie scene, the two together protesting against the Vietnam War and against societal drawbacks of the time. However, one countermovement in particular came into prominence: The punk scene, a rebellious, distinctive expression of rock. As a result live music became commercial: Stadium rock emerged and tours turned into proper events. Even to this day part of the allure of rock music is the image of rock stars on the stage - on the smoke engulfed, theatrically lit, main stage covered with sweat, bear chested rockers standing between the drums, guitars and electric bass.
