Course Title: Topology I (Algebraic Topology)
Time: Tuesday 1:00 pm-2:30 pm, Friday 10:30 am -12:00 noon
Place: AG 77
Office Hours: By appointment.
Teaching Assistant: Biswajit Nag A-360
Textbook: Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher. We will cover most of Chapters 1 and 2, plus part of Chapter 3.
Course Outline: Algebraic topology is the art of turning questions in topology to questions in algebra. The tools to achieve this include fundamental group (including covering spaces and van Kampen's theorem), homology theory, cohomology theory. Time permitting, we will also see the connection between homology and cohomology of a manifold via Poincare duality.
Grade policy: 60% Homework, 40% Final exam.
Homework Policy: Homeworks will be posted on the course webpage biweekly. You are encouraged to work with your friends but required to write the solutions on your own.
Final Exam: Details to be decided later.
