Golden Earring's hit song Radar Love may lose some meaning to younger generations. The tune, released in 1973, was written long before the days of cellphones and text messages and is all about a driver who is trying to get home because he knows his lover wants him home.

"Don't need no phone at all, we've got a thing called radar love," the singer croons about how he and his lover are connected on a deep level.

It's also been featured in a number of movies, TV shows and commercials. Wayne and Garth rock out to the tune in their car outside of a McDonalds in Wayne's World 2, and Golden Earring provides the soundtrack for a brief car chase in Detroit Rock City as well.

With support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partners, Buler and his colleagues analyzed seven years of weather surveillance radar data to predict potentially important stopover sites for migratory landbirds in the region. They also conducted surveys for two fall seasons at 48 sites in the Delmarva peninsula and mainland Virginia to corroborate the radar detections with that they observed on the ground.

The ground surveys that Buler and his colleagues conducted at stopover sites in Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland not only helped them corroborate what they were seeing on the radar, they helped them figure out how long birds stayed at certain stopover sites, and why. As with people, it has a lot to do with the quality and quantity of resources available to help them rest and refuel.

The combination of the regional radar data and the survey data equips people involved in conservation at any scale to identify important stopover sites and make management decisions that reflect the needs of specific species, such as ground foragers that feed on insects in the leaf litter.

The DNR provided funding to help ground truth the radar data in coastal Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula through the Resource Assessment Service Power Plant Research Program. Brewer, who is the Science Program Manager for the Wildlife and Heritage Service, said the study can direct her agency to other priority areas where they can use fine-scale data to narrow in on the forest patches that offer the greatest value to migratory birds.

While the recent Groundhog Day snowstorm was a headache to millions of people from Chicago to Maine, it was nothing but enlightenment at 40,000 feet, where University of Illinois professor of atmospheric sciences Bob Rauber was on the maiden scientific voyage of a new radar system that provided a view of snow like nobody has seen before.

The plane they used, owned by the National Science Foundation, is called HIAPER, short for High-performance Instrumented Airborne Platform for Environmental Research. Accordingly the new radar, developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research, is called HIAPER Cloud Radar, and Rauber believes it can drastically improve our understanding of storms and weather.

The flight on February 2 was also noteworthy for the rapid turnaround between the time they recognized that the storm was forming and actually flying out to study it, Rauber notes. The possibility of using radar from space was first discussed in the US Air Force during the Eisenhower administration. However, President Eisenhower placed very strict controls on satellite intelligence collection and at first insisted on personally approving every photographic satellite intelligence mission that the United States conducted. In this environment, the Air Force space leadership determined that radar transmissions from a satellite might be too provocative for a president already concerned about passively taking pictures and collecting electronic transmissions, and so they did not start the program at that time.

Although details remain sketchy, it appears as if an experimental radar satellite program was started during the Kennedy administration. This program, known as Quill, produced three satellites: two flight models and a test model. One satellite was launched in 1964. It used a radar that was probably built by Raytheon to take images of the ground which were stored on magnetic tape. Quill used the same recovery system as the Corona reconnaissance satellite, returning the magnetic tape to Earth in a recoverable capsule that was caught in mid-air by an aircraft.

In 1988 the Space Shuttle launched the first Onyx radar satellite (although a press leak referred to the satellite by its earlier name, Lacrosse and the program might still have had this name at the time.) More satellites were launched in 1991, 1997, 2000, and 2005. In 1998 the NRO even released images of one of these satellites under construction. The satellite is a large rectangular frame to which are attached numerous electronics boxes covered in gold-colored kapton insulating foil. According to amateur astronomers who have observed the actual spacecraft in orbit, the satellite has a large dish and two large solar panels sticking off the main body. e24fc04721
