This group was formed during the Uprisings of 2020 which spread to Philadelphia after the public lynching of George Floyd. During these uprisings, many supermarkets in designated food deserts were destroyed. Food deserts can be described as geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance. - "Food Empowerment Project"
The hardest hit sections of the city were West Philly and North Philly. Recognizing our privilege as residents who do not live in food deserts and were not as impacted by the uprisings, we decided to help to bring groceries to our communities.
We believe that our focus should be on helping the community during this difficult time and will refrain from discussing the right and wrong of the actions that has led us to mobilize for our people within this space.
This response has expanded and grown over the last two years. We have had the privilege of setting up in over 18 different locations and have distributed nearly $100,000 in groceries to date.
We are extremely grateful for the support of Black Lives Matter Philly's Mutual Aid Committee, RJ, Philly Home & School, Turning Points for Children, FAWN, and Power Circle for supporting us and our work on an ongoing basis.
