I thrash in the darkness against the adversaries,
never seeing the smallest face.
And each night a whistling and a cracking,
A stamping vanishing tread.
And I stand bloody and death-weary
And will not, will not fall.
Every night after the vast streaming silence
Cathedral organs and dawning light
Beyond my eyes,
Stooping, smiling,
an immense and shadowy countenance.
