Communications, New Media & Cultural Studies McMaster University
Rachelle (ra-shell) Sabourin is a PhD candidate and Sessional Instructor in Communications, New Media, and Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Rachelle has been an arts advocate and administrator in Toronto since 2012, working with non-profit arts organizations and independent curatorial and publication projects. She is a devoted feminist, queer scholar and educator interested in the connections between contemporary art history, social justice, labour rights, and visual culture. Her background as a contemporary art historian focusing on subcultural art practices informs her current research on legacy-building for women artists, activism within and against art institutions, and investigating the slippage between public mourning, fan-based martyrdom, and consequence culture.
Rachelle is a Sessional Instructor in the Department of Communications and New Media Arts and the School of the Arts at McMaster, and the project manager for Critical Data Studios: Expanded Data with Dr. Andrea Zeffiro. She remains an active member of her academic community by serving as an elected board member of the University Art Association of Canada.
