5 Family-Friendly Hikes in Arkansas’ Ozark National Forest
Since the weather has started ‘springing up’, and we’re seeing some beautiful days, why not trek to the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas? This area is known for its gorgeous scenery and an abundance of hiking adventures. Though there are trails of all levels in this region, families have many kid-friendly hiking options to ensure happiness all around.
Glory Hole Falls - Rated ‘Moderate’, this is a 2-mile out-and-back hike with falls that come through a water-drilled hole in the solid rock. It’s an interesting formation to view and well worth the steady climb out when you head back to the road.
Magnolia Falls - This is another 2-mile out-and-back hike just down the road from Glory Hole, but it’s much easier since the elevation remains consistently steady throughout. There are actually two falls at the end, one just downstream from the other, and even two other falls that you can hike to on side trails. Don’t miss this pretty, easy trail with some stunning rewards at the end.
Alum Cove Natural Bridge Recreation Area - Just a mile-long loop trail, this hike features a natural bridge and several small caves to explore. You can also see bluff shelters and small waterfalls and enjoy a picnic site when you’re finished. The kids can have a ton of fun climbing around the rock formations. It’s advised to trek this one earlier in the morning, as it’s definitely popular!
Big Creek Cave Trail - A few miles down a county road, this 3-mile out-and-back trail is a little off the beaten path (AWD or 4WD is recommended) but so worth it. Even the slower drive doesn’t stop this one from being a favorite because there are so many falls and caves to explore. Though it’s a little longer than the other trails listed, the elevation is pretty steady, so it’s still considered an easy-to-moderate trail.
The two main waterfalls, Big Creek and Wolf Creek, are so worth the trek, and there’s so much more to see on side trails - other waterfalls and caves that have paths marked with flagging. You even get to walk through a meadow, which is a nice change of scenery in the woods.
Triple Falls - This isn’t exactly a hike, but a really cool triple waterfall that’s pretty much right off the road. The road, however, is another where AWD or 4WD is recommended (it's quite a descent on the way down, resulting in a steep climb out), but it is well maintained since there is a boy scout camp at the end of it. It’s a great option for the end of the day when you’re done hiking and are looking for an easy reward.

Every generation is shaped by its stories. Today many of these stories arrive through algorithms rather than conversations. Social media teaches us what to value, what to fear, whom to admire, and ultimately what kind of people we should become — but perhaps we should reflect on its power as a tool of discipleship and potential impact on our worldviews.
We all know that social media has its pros and cons. Love it or hate it, the way we communicate has been forever altered, and global reach at our fingertips can be a powerfully effective — and woefully dangerous — thing. As parents are well aware, raising kids in the digital age has its challenges. How great that there is a wealth of knowledge so readily available to discover, but how tragic that lies, filth, and corruption are so much easier to find as well. It’s not just our kids who are bombarded with it though — we adults even have to be diligent against the negative, misleading information that is out there.
We have learned over the years about the importance of selective consumption when it comes to social media, but we also know it isn’t wise to avoid the news or worldviews other than our own. How can we be educated and informed while utilizing social media for good, following accounts and seeking out influences that build us up?
So much of what we see celebrated on our media platforms revolves around self-promotion. Influencers, constantly chasing statistics and page views, find themselves tied down with developing content to keep followers engaged, and yet many people claim they come away from social media feeling discouraged because the carefully curated content will never match their own lives. What we have to remember, though, is that entertainment is not designed to reflect reality, and we can actually seek out platforms that encourage us to live out our ideals, strengthen our faith, and motivate us to take positive action.
Many of us admire those who are encouraging others to live out a life of purpose and integrity, those who show a holy example of surrender. It often appears as though the social media system is designed in such a way that it prevents us from promoting humility. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and yet we’re all so immersed in our own individual battles that it appears too costly to reach out. It’s tempting to want to keep our worlds small, but we’re also inspired when we see others who are intentional in their faith — it gives us hope and resolve to do the same.
When you think about the people in your life who have impacted you for the better, who are they and what did they contribute? In your engagements online, do you feel encouraged and rewarded, or defeated and depleted? Cultivating positive relationships should be our goal, so the best social media interactions we can take part in are the ones that make us better people to those who have a physical presence in our lives.
What motivates us to step out and love others? What gets us outside of our comfort zones? What challenges us to unashamedly pursue our purpose and push out the fear that holds us back?
The simple fact is that the people who speak wisdom, truth, and love into others’ souls are the ones we should desire to emulate. The ones who use their brokenness to pour life into others. The ones who reject shallow living in favor of the pursuit of a higher calling. The ones who use their voices to proclaim Christ to a lost and hurting world.
Some simple steps we can take this week as we reflect on these values we want to promote:
Take an honest look at the voices shaping our hearts and minds and make sure they are pointing us toward truth.
Don’t let our online lives become substitutions for authentic Christian community.
Be honest about whose approval we’re seeking and adjust accordingly.
Support accounts that promote truth, grace, and love in a world that desperately needs all three.
How we choose to share our stories, both online and in ‘real’ life, can make all the difference. Let’s support those who are spurring us on, and let’s use our influence to challenge one another to do the same.
