Teachers who participated in the four-day R.E.A.L. Project learned from Dr. LaGarrett King about his Framework of Black Historical Consciousness and learned how to include Black agency, resistance, humanity and joy when teaching Black history. Teachers also participated in break-out sessions where they learned about Black history of Kansas City, and curated primary sources to use in their lessons. Teachers then collaborated with one another to create lesson plans that are available for anyone to access.
Our goals with the R.E.A.L. Project are to:
Increase teacher knowledge and comfort in teaching Black history
Build teacher capacity for teaching with primary and secondary sources
Connect teachers to institutions and organizations in Kansas City to support teaching Black history
Build comradery among teachers with similar interests around Kansas City
