Using RaceLab overlays with Oculus

First of all, please note:

There is no real suport for Oculus in the RaceLabApps. Unfortunately all the OpenVR compatible overlays are NOT working with Oculus. Still, there are possibilities to make it working within Oculus!

Option 1, not recommended: One can start the RaceLabApps overlays and pin them one-by-one. The trouble is, that this causes the Oculus app to freeze within 10 mins. Especially when taking the goggles off and putting back. You can test this option, but I would recommend to do so in some Practice session.

Option 2: You can start the RaceLabApps overlay in browser windows, and pin the browser window into the Oculus. Pro is, that it is working (as long as Oculus will not crash by showing only a yellow exclamation mark) and it will not freeze. Con is, that it is not that nice.

Option 3: It is a bit more complicated, and needs some knowledge. One can create a small webpage consisting all overlays, and pin this single browser window into Oculus. For details please check this page.

Option 4: There seems to be a solution to use Oculus via SteamVR with Revive. For details see this post from Michael Goffart. One fellow user (Veper, thanks for his support) was testing it, so far with limited success: It's "working" but now with SteamVR I get random stutters when RaceLabApps is running, I see other people are reporting that in #report-bug. As soon as I quit the app iRacing runs fine. I tried editting the config file from 120fps to 30 and 10, no change.

Known problems:

  • This solution is independent from iRacing. Thus whatever you pin here will hide the iRacing window below. If you have a button, or some other important information, you will not be able to easily access/see it.

  • If you put the window too close to yourself, it might become greyed out, as you jump back to iRacing. If you move it further away, until it attaches to the "cylinder", where the virtual desktop sits, it usually helps.

  • The lovely yellow exclamation mark. At the beginning it works fine, but suddenly it is just like that. According to my experience this is mainly coming if you take off the goggles and as you put it back on your head, it is just rendered as this. What's the reason, and when it's going to be fixed? Ask Oculus!

    • UPDATE 18.05.2020: I got a hint from one of the users (thanks TheAppexmissers Martijn). See his notes below:

      • Just tested a whole bunch of stuff regarding the Rift S and pulled out windows. Yesterday tested a practice session for more than an hour. Streaming, taking the headset off, on , off closing the gaming starting it backup etc. My test was a piece of ducktape on the sensor inbetween the glass (that tells if you have the head set on or not). It worked like a charme! never got the yellow !

And I i use the computer to play non VR games, I take it of so the headset is not On the whole time as that makes no sense. So now before putting on my Computer i put a piece of ducktape over the sensor and than do my sessions of racing and streaming
